ice house

I currently have a Shappell S4000 and it is starting to see some wear. I am looking to purchase a new portable and am looking strongly at the Frabill Speed Shak XL and I am wondering if anyone has this shelter and how they like it pro's and con's. I do want another suitcase style again.

Have had mine for 5 years and like it. It sets up faster that anything any of my buddy's have and has enough room. The biggest drawbacks are the weight, (although newer ones may be lighter, I don't know) and you really can't fish 2 holes next to each other. (they'd only be about 6" apart) One friend has a clam 6800 and I must say that when I need a new one I'll have to take a hard look. more room than the XL, setup only takes about 2 minutes more, but it's alot lighter than mine.

My friend has a Frabill Speed shack the one man model. He loves it. I fished with him, I was in my Clam 5x6, last winter and was so impressed with it that I am also looking at a flip style house. I'm leaning toward an Otter but also like the Frabill.

I have a frabil speed shack. For setting up it is the best. I really like the frabil suitcase style because it is very roomy has a nice high roof and has a floor so you are not in direct contact with the ice that is the only thing I do not like about the flip style (just my personel preference). The one bad thing about the frabil speed shack is it weighs about 90 pounds so it is heavy compared to the other shelters.

    • Yes I am definitely going Muzzy hunting. I prefer it to Rifle and it is a close second to Bow. I usually save tags and vacation time for it. I just love hunting in the snow!
    • 6Lb for me on all my walleye rods...
    • I heard a report today of guys pounding slab crappies through the ice near DL. This shallow pond is reported to have 4" of ice.
    • That is how my 1T external HDD is. There is a 12v power supply and a USB connection.
    • Interesting. I have used it in the past and have better results with nutty butter. SOn in law shot doezilla last week and the fat was unbelievable on her. I saved a few nice chunks and will put it out to see what happens.
    • yep. first cut them off with the meat saw. Then cut again with hack saw. Then a little bit of filing. Takes a while but no mess.well, not much anyway. lol
    • Wow, I didn't think single stage versus 2 stage snow throwers would become a Ford vs Chevy conversation.  My take is that for the average home owner with a flat, concrete/asphalt, standard three stall garage wide driveway, the single stage should suffice.  I will continue using my 2 stage at the cabin on the driveway and gravel parking/walkways.   Leech has me concerned on the Honda single stage, so now I just need to determine which to buy.
    • I wasn't planning on going due to the project list getting longer but I took my 7 year old out to sit last weekend. We got home and he was telling his mom all about it and how cool it was seeing deer walk by and how he wished there was more time in the season. That was when the wife asked why I wasn't going to go during muzzleloader and that I should go so I can take him out again. I felt like I had to be a good husband and just agree with her. Sometimes it's about compromising with your wife just to keep the peace in the house.
    • I would bet that there will be people out on smaller lakes in the Detroit Lakes area this weekend.
    • If time allows I will get out for a couple walks in the woods with the muzzy.  I didn't get anything with the gun and have yet to buy a bow license cuz time was spent chasing fall walleyes opposed to deer.  Good Luck to those that get out!!
