Walleye Water Temps

Recommended Posts

In my opinion, this question is a little broad only because walleyes may act differently from northern MN to southern MN and from the state of Washington to the state of New York. For lake systems, as a general rule, though, walleyes spawn between 38 - 45 degrees F, move to mid-lake structure or cover between 50 - 65 degrees F and then head back to shoreline areas prior to ice-up and/or winter when water temperatures start to drop back below 60 degrees F.

Depth and speed of the presentation are the most important things to consider. Colder the water, traditionally the slower presentatiions work better. I say that, but there are exeptions to the rule. Sometimes when they are not bitting, I try a more aggressive approach and make it a more of an instictive/reaction bite. Cranks, spinners and jigs/twister tail on a straight retrieve sometimes can produce when lindy rigging and slip bobbers aren't working.

I guess my point is that there are guidelines, but you have to be willing to try different patterns until you see what works.
