Voyageurs National Park Camping

Recommended Posts

I've got a couple trips planned for camping in Voyageurs and I'm considering bringing a screen tent. I'm concerned if this is over kill and if the campsites are large enough to support screen tent and a regular tent.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have always been able to find a place to squeeze in a screen tent (we usually only have one tent tho). For the first 9 years we had a 10x10, and last year went to a Cabelas one that has the full coverage cover and is 14x10. I do have some concerns with the new one, as a few of the sites were pretty tight for the old one (but the convienience of the new screen tent outweighs it)

Our family has spent over 200 nights camped out on the islands of Kab/Nam/Rainy the last 10 years, and we've never not been able to set up a screen tent at a site.

From my experiences some are big enough for a screen tent and a few tents. There are some smaller sites that are only big enough for 1-2 smaller tents.

General rule of thumb- sites with docks and right near the main lake will be larger. Sites without docks and more secluded in smaller bays will be significantly smaller.

I have up in June and September. On June weekends sites with docks will be harder to come by, even during the week later in the month. In September I've never had issues finding any sites.

Its an awesome place, great place to paddle.

We always have a screen tent in addition to our sleeping tent. We usually put the picnic table inside. Nice to eat without bugs and helpful to escape the sun and rain. I would strongly recommend bringing one with you.

Bring one with absolutely. Like others mentioned, use it over the picnic table. Every designated site has a table and if it has a table, then you have room for the screen tent. Not many sites have docks. They just started putting those in a few years ago. They do get filled up fast though. I remember camping with my parents up there about 15-20 years ago. We camped every single weekend on Namakan starting from opening fishing to opening grouse hunting....then it was off to the shack for the Fall. We never had trouble finding a good site back then. We did that for many years until we found a cabin for sale in Crane. After several bear encounters and several new tents and coolers my Dad said time for solid walls. Now my brother has continued the legacy up there and bought a cabin on Crane two years ago. Tomorrow we leave for Crane for the annual guys weekend of fishing, lieing, and solving the worlds problems smile
