MARINERMAGNUM
Found some warblers to photo with the new 70-200. I was distracted at first but soon realized that the depth of focus was not what I'm used to-very shallow! Not to mention I am struggling trying to figure out how to interpret raw settings in dpp when I use the 20D. The version of Canon's DPP I have is geared toward the 30D,40D etc. I think it has something to do with the newer cameras having "picture styles" and the 20D doesn't. In camera settings in the 20D don't match up with the scales in the new DPP,so I'm not sure where the contrast and a few other settings are zeroed. Focus tests turned out fine,so I know the lens is ok,but if I would catch focus on a branch even 1-2 inches ahead or behind of the subject, [at F 2.8] a small bird would look soft. Anyway,I really like the lens, and it's cool to see 4000TV at iso 100! The last shot is included because I don't see Palm Warblers too often and thought some other folks might enjoy him. The palm warbler is a 100% center crop. All shots with Canon 20D and 70-200 F2.8 IS all at 200mm
Moose
Mariner,Looks like you're out having fun desipte or blast of winter.I like the 3rd one. I think the budding shub puts the size of the bird into context. I also like the pose of the bird in that picture. I do not know anything about the lens or settings but they look great to my eye. MN Shutterbug
I would never have thought of a 200mm as a birding lens. They all look super. The lens sure gives nice bokeh. Someday, I need to buy myself a new toy.
MARINERMAGNUM
Thanks X. I'm not convinced that 200mm is enough-in fact I'm sure it's not. I wouldn't think of getting rid of the 100-400. I grabbed the 30D and 100-400 and took this shot. The birds were ALOT farther away, and the 400 still does good work. Canon 30D,100-400 IS @400mm
mmeyer
Those look great MM. If only they made a 17-500mm 2.8 IS lens that was cheap. Then a guy wouldn't have to worry about which lens he needed.
Steve Foss
Nice stuff, MM, regardless of the lens. Love those warblers! Mike, such a lens would weigh 20 pounds.
