Rebel9921
The BOAT is finally HOME!!!!!!!! Yep got her out of the storage... and even named her... gonna paint the name on her for sure... "LIL MAYHEM" goes perfect with my Ram, "LIL BABY"... Now begins the long process of the mission to make her brand new all over again... I'll definitely be posting before and after photos as the work progresses... Dont think I'll get her done by June 7th... more likely Sept/Oct... but thats a small price to make a boat brand new all over again and good for other 20-30 years... RK
Hiya - Glad to hear it! I cleaned mine this past weekend. What a pigsty. For years I've cleaned my boat carpets by scrubbing them down with hot water and dishwasher detergent (it doesn't suds up much) and then hosing it down thoroughly. This year I bought a Bissel carpet shampooer. So I did my usual cleaning routine. Then hit it with the shampoo machine. My God... First pass - the water that came out black. 2nd pass - black. 3rd pass - brownish. 4th pass - almost able to see through it - but not quite... This was AFTER a thorough vacuuming and scrubbing with a brush. Man, it was unreal... Glad I got the thing cuz my carpet's actually clean now, but it was gross.Cheers,Rob Kimm
Nick Kuhn
Are you talking one of those upright vacuum sized cleaners? I never thought of using that on the boat. I'll have to give it a try...

HugoBox
I don't overdo it on the boat cleaning but RK is right on - its amazing how much better it looks if you've spent some time fluffing and buffing. My wife almost killed me when she was the $400 Dyson in the boat but we had a very logical conversation about priorities and we have an understanding now... I've also found that Simple Green works wonders on any vinyl or plastic. It also does a decent job on the water spots on the lower unit - i've tried a ton of things for the motor and so far the best thing is a spray that they sell at motorcycle shops - sort of wash an wax together - my brother has the Honda brand but AI don't know if that makes difference - does anyone else have a secret recipe for motors? thanks -erik
keith schultz
Keep it clean and it looks great and lasts a long time!!!!!!!!!
Rebel9921
Tippman... dont tempt me!!! LOL Personally, if it was up to me, I would've painted the boat metallic black... to match my black Ram... but not gonna do any repainting... The carpet definitely HAS to go... it has been sitting up there for SOOOO long untouched that moss is actually growing on the floor under the consoles... so much sand has blown into it... and the floor under the consoles is BAD too.. definitely will be replacing it... As for the front and rear casting deck... not sure about the front but the back is basically all aluminum lids so Im safe in the back... I already made it a goal to rip all the carpeting out and install marine grade vinyl flooring... and to switch all the wirings, gauge, trolling motor, chairs, etc etc... I will be ordering a gelcoat restoration system that Nels Larsen recommended...
Tippman
I was planning on getting the pressure washer out to try and get some of the stains out of the carpet in my boat. Before I do now has anyone tried this before? Guess if it doesn't work I'll resort to the Bissell foam cleaner.
RK
Hiya - Vahn - The upright ones work ok but they're sort of hard to maneuver around seat bases and the like. I have a friend (he's a little, ahhh...particular, shall we say) that takes the seat bases out so he has a flat floor to work with, and uses an upright cleaner. Too much work for me... The one I used is called a 'Little Green' and it's basically just a hand-held deal with a hose. Takes a little elbow grease but sure did the job. Keith - not on your life. With a two year old boy running around my house, the off-white carpet in our family room looks like a Holstein. If anyone's carpet is getting cleaned, it's mine... Tippman - Careful with the pressure washer. Have the nozzle set to fan, and don't get it too close to the carpet. A pressure washer can blow the fibers right out of the backing and you get little squiggles in your carpet, or bald spots if you really try to blast out a stain (it'll get rid if a stain all right - by getting rid of the fibers that were stained besides...) (Don't ask me how I know this...) A pressure washer does work pretty well though if you're careful. What I usually do is put dishwasher liquid in a bucket of hot water, and scrub the carpet with a scrub brush with a long handle. Then pressure wash the whole works working from front to back. If your pressure washer has a soap reservoir use it if you want, but only use either dishwasher liquid or low-suds carpet soap. Anything that really foams like dish soap or general purpose cleaners is bad news. Unless you get it ALL rinsed out, every time it rains your boat will turn into a bubble bath. (Again, don't ask...) If you use soap you REALLY have to rinse the heck out of it or the soap that is still in the carpet will just attract more dirt. For spots, get some stuff called Spot Shot from Target. Works great. Before you scrub the thing down, hit the spots with Spot Shot and follow the directions on the can... Lifts up most everything. cheers, Rob Kimm
HugoBox
Not sure what kind of boat you run but do you have any suggestions for the best way to take care of painted aluminum. Getting rid of water spots as well as how to protect it. Our boat is 10 years old and with two kids I have no delusionns that I'll be replacing it any time soon so I want to keep it as "new" as possible. Thanks - erik

You conjure up some hilarious images, man. You have a Persuader Baby Duck to double as a rubber ducky in that floating bubble bath of yours? Of course, you're probably more old-school than that and have a Muskie Duck with the little paddling rubber feet.

Howdy Erik, We're good at getting them dirty in this forum, not so good on the cleaning end. Post this question in the Boats & Motors forum and you'll have the right info from the crew there. Then, pass the info back to us!
cjac
The advantage of the carpet cleaners is it pulls the dirt UP versus the pressure washer which is sending it where? Down, sideways, sprayed who-knows-where? I have used the Shop Vac after pre-treating and see the water color, I can only imagine a real carpet cleaner and what it does. I brought my rig of storage this weekend as well, kept me busy and away from spending money at Thornes, so not all bad. Found an Avid bass rod and some cool walleye cranks I bought last year that I totally forgot about. I have an upright Bissel with the hose attachements, might have to give it a try. I like the idea of a handheld one though. Rebel: Have fun, and consult with the crew in the Boats & Motors forum, they'll help you make the right decisions with the interior remake, wiring, etc. RK: Be ready for a slice of humility after seeing the dirt that comes up from the household carpet. It borders on being embarassing..... Be sure do do when the BOSS is away.
