Boar
I figured out how to make my own scent ball an was wondering how a guy can find some scent flavoring like bacon, I know liquid smoke would work or whershester sauce how everr you spell it, but would like a bacon flavor. Coffee shopps have pretty much any berry concentate syrup a guy would would want but woul like to try an find a liquid bacon flavor an I've googled everything I can think of. Also, I think I might have asked this last year, but last year I baited from the start until middle of Oct. an had one bear in particular hit my bait everyday an would not show during the light, of course nocturnal. Well this year I'm gonna try something different an start baiting only a week before hunting in hopes of any bear NOT having ample time to figure out my habits, When going into bait bang bucketts in an out right? right. When hunting, go in banging bucketts an come out banging bucketts then go back in quietly to hunt? I thought of having two trails, one to the bait an an alternative one to my stand. I dont have someone to do the two in one out trick an would like to the human scent down to one person. What do you guy's think? Boar
Greybeard53
Boar,I'm not sure if this would work for you, but I know that Iams petfood does make a bacon flavor sauce for dogs. It comes in a bottle kind of like ketchup, and has the consistency of gravy. It's meant to be poured over dry dogfood, but it may work for your scentball. Antler_Creek_Taxidermy
Boar Try getting some of the bacon spray that is sold by the same company that sells the bait ball that you are talking about. I used it the last few years and the bacon smell is pretty strong. I'm sure you could just add that to your recipe for making the scent ball.p.s By the way, thanks for sharing your recipe with me last year. I will definetly give it a try this year! Boar
Thanks for the info guys, Yea on the scentball, I havent tried making one yet but I'm pretty sure this would work, mine fell on the concrete floor last year an to my surprise I,m pretty sure it's just corn syrup cooked to harden with flavoring, I'm sure some of you have a grandma that would make hard rock candie for X-mas, pretty sure it's the same ting. any old receipe book has the receipe for hard rock candy. Like I said havent tried it yet but pretty sure it's close to the same thing. Boar
bogwalker
Hey boar, I am just curious, what time you dump your bait and what times you enter and leave your stand.
Boar
I have to bait an hunt around my job, I get to my site about 4;30 pm an the same when huntin, on the weekends I keep the same schedual. When I leave my stand wait till dark which is earlier in the woods than out in the open. I hate the leaving part, always wondering if I'm gonna spook the bear when climbing out of stand. bogwalker
If you can, bait earlier (no later than 1:00)and be in your stand no later than 3:00. Don't leave your stand until it is too dark to see the ground below your stand. These things may not be possible with your job, but they are probably why your bears are feeding after dark. Good luck. corysluckylucky7
If you get a smart bear (especially the big ones) that has your game figured out - change things up on him. Put a stand farther back from the baitto catch him in his "hangup area" or for an exciting hunt try a double bull groundblind. They work awesome especially on the bears that like to come in or come close enough to look up in your stand to see if anybodies there.
Boar
I've taken two bear of this site before, one just missing the books, the first bear i took was baited even later than 4:30 due to a different job. Just no way of baiting earlier that 4:30, if I could i obviously would. Later boar
JustLOVEit
I think you should try what we did last year when it was pretty tough for us to get our bears out before shooting hours expires... I started the year baiting every afternoon, so by sunset the bait would be there aready for the bears to eat.. we did that straight through the first week of hunting... our bait site would get hit, but they weren't showing up until late.. So, we tryed baiting the last 30 minutes of shooting hours and hunting the early morning... and it worked... always showed up right before sunrise too... goodluck.. Boar
I would think if ya baited the last 30 minuets of shooting time, the bear would have a greater chance of feeding during the night, but i guesse it worked for ya. Sept. 1st is on a monday this year, I would care to guesse that That would be the opener this year also, not sure. I just might take that first week of Sept. off work, Lots of time to think about it.
