T-water
So tomorrow I'm going to Cabelas with a buddy. He is heading to Canada (Eagle Lake) this June with his son who loves to fish. He doesn't mind fishing but he usually uses my gear. I can't go to Canada with them as I have my first little one on the way. So it's time for him to get his own stuff! I started a list today but it's kind of overwhelming. He literally wants to buy everything. Ideas please... I've been to Eagle one time so I know some ideas for walleye, but I also think they'll be doing some throwing for pike and smallmouth. Give me your best list. PerchJerker
I'm not very familiar with Eagle Lake, but walleyes in June should be on deeper shoreline points and moving out to mid-lake structure. Fireball jigs from Northland Tackle, tipped with a minnow, are a really popular choice. I'd get 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 ounce sizes, in brighter colors.Pitching jigs and twister tails will work too, probably 1/4 ounce jigs (maybe 1/8 if the fish are shallow, or 3/8 if they want to vertical jig them in deeper water), and 3 inch tails like Powerbait or Gulp. Bright colors again.Personally I don't mess around with leeches, crawlers, or live bait rigs on canadian lakes, but if they like fishing that way there's several components they can buy and use.For pike and smallies I think throwing spinnerbaits is a solid approach. Same goes for throwing rattle baits, which cast a mile and sink so they cover lots of depths. Pitching jigs and twister tails to shorelines, shallow reefs, and weedlines will catch pike and smallies along with the walleyes. But you could also mix in some in-line spinners (like Mepps) or some smaller bucktails, or some husky jerk-baits if the fish are shallow (maybe deep husky jerk-baits if the fish are a little deeper), or cranks like Fat Raps. I don't know the lake to know this, but maybe there's a top-water bite for smallies too. Options to cast for pike and smallies are virtually unlimited so it really depends on what they like, and how much time they want to spend doing it. Personally when I go to canada it's usually to concentrate on numbers of walleyes, and we usually pick up enough pike and smallies while targeting walleyes to keep it interesting.Have fun shopping. mr walleye
If I was going at that time, for walleyes I would bring 1 1/2oz and 2oz bottom bouncers with chartreuse or gold spinner rigs and GULP CRAWLERS in natural, pull them on the weed lines in the morning and work deeper as the day goes by, also I would pull three ways with #11 or #13 original RAPALAS in firetiger or gold and black or silver and black with a 3oz bell sinker, on any long points or deep flats an dusk, when we go at that time of the year the walleyes are always in less than 40 feet of water. For PIKE a RAPALA SUPER SHAD in gold, big spoons, Storm swim baits work good and are cheap, large tubes work if they are in the shallows. For SMALL MOUTHjigs and white GULP minnow grubs, crank baits, tubes, top water baits,A small mouth will come up from deep water to hit a top water bait. TrophyEyes
Jigs (various sizes),3"-4" twister tails or gulp minnows,x-raps, shad raps, Dare Devils, spinners on a three way set up or bottom bouncer works. Personally, if I had one lure combination to bring to canada it would be a pink(shrimp)colored northland jig and a 4" Lindy Munchie glow white with yellow tail. That combination has caught well over 600 walleyes, 50-30"+ pike, lake trout and its fair share of smallies on Mille lacs.If they are going to target smallies a small mepps would work as well as a larger mepps bucktail for pike. GRH
We go up to canada every year in june. For the northerns I would Bring Spoons Hammered copper, Blue/Silver, and Orange/ Copper. For All fish I would bring X-raps, Husky jerk-baits. we catch a ton of northern, bass and walleye throughing these with a stop and go retrieve or just a constent twitch bringing it back in. These can put alot of walleye in the boat if there shallow. Wind blown weeds and rocky points can be awesome.Jigs and plastics work good, so does a lidy rig with a plastic on it. we still get leaches and fish on lindy rigs and that still has been the best for us.
