gulllakeguy
Hey guys/gals I have a problem with my 1999 Merc 50hp 4 stroke tiller with power trim. When it is up I can push it down by hand slowly. When I try to drive/load it on the trailer it will drop when throttled and would hit the bottom if I didn't stop. It still works for normal operations. Oh, it's worse when it gets cold out, too. Any ideas?
boatfixer
Check the fluid level and make sure the manual release is seated. Back it off a turn or so, the screw it back in. Do not over tighten but make sure it is snug. just some easy things to try first.
ripstick
For sure the fluid check it. Make sure the fluid is not milky and is full. Good luck.
marine_man
Yep, I'd check the manual release. Look on the outside of your transom for a flat head screw that's mounted / connected to the trim and tilt unit, there's probably a slot or hole in your mounting bracket to access it. Do as boatfixer suggests and see if that makes things better. If it's not that and it's full of fluid it's probably time for a seal kit and rebuild.Good luck!marine_man
VMS
Sounds like a new seal is in order.I would agree though, to check the manual release. Steve
250XB
I had to have the trim replaced on a 1999 40 4-stroke already, if I had a to guess yours is bad also.
gulllakeguy
Yep I checked the fluid level and that was good and not milky...looks like it might be time for a rebuild or new trim. I wonder what would be the best way to go there. I bought a Clymer book last year and put a new impeller(sp?) in it. All by myself which is a great achievment for me as I don't know jack about boat motors. Is the trim rebuid something I could do? Or should I just look at getting a new trim unit. That'll set me back some clams I'll bet. Oh well, when it comes to fixin the boat I might even steal from the kids piggybank. lol
