Sturgeon Season is Coming!!!

Last year was my first year chasing after those big old boys in the Rainy River. Didn't have too much luck but had a blast watching people pull some monsters out of the river. Anyone else looking forward to the season?

What are some of your guys favorite hooks to use for sturgeon? I tried using large circle hooks last year, but didn't get to many pickups.

My favorite is a 4 or 5/0 Gamakatsu Octupus Circle

Nightcrawlers by far are the preferred bait, but others will work as well. Cut Shad, Shrimp and Sucker are favorites.

So is the Rainy River about the only place to go for sturgeon? I fished for lake sturgeon once on the Wisconsin Michigan border, and have hooked into them a time or three before. I would like to go if I could find somewhere to shore fish from.

Either Rainy or there is a short (6-week) fall season on the MN/WI portion of the St. Croix from Taylors Falls to the confluence.
