Tiger's

I got to thinking about it, what are the regulations regarding fishing for tiger's? IE: can you start fishing for them earlier?

This kind of ties into another topic, does anyone here go fish Wisconsin before Minnesota? How about the St. Croix with a Wisconsin license?

Winter is driving me nuts...really wanna go fishing! Kentucky can't get here soon enough...

Cheers

Jeff

While you can't target them you certainly can go on the metro lakes and throw for pike and end up catching them. You don't need to be throwing anything big to catch them.

It does bring up and interesting point though of why if they can't spawn is the opener the same as the pure strain.

Any lake that has pure strain and pike have a slight chance of having tigers. If tiger season opened early you would probably get those people that claim they are fishing just for the tigers.

Sure they could have a few lakes where you could fish tigers at the season opener but that would probably just lead to more confusion with the regs.

There are some lakes with naturally occuring tigers, so it would be next to impossible to not have people use that as a loop hole for fishing for muskies. I do understand the point as it makes sense, just too much work to enforce for something that in the big picture is near the bottom of a list of DNR concerns, if it would even make a "list".

A case could be made for the designated tiger lakes, but the micro managing of season dates and lake specific rules is hard enough as it is.

Bottom line is that the good guys (like us) understand these things and the bad apples will do whatever they want, regardless of what's right.

There's a somewhat similar post in the Vermillion thread about fishing for pike in May and not looking like you're going after muskies. Great info there from Tom Wehler. If you're bored it's a good read with great info, I think the post is titled Muskie Season....

I suppose, not that it matters to me as I'll be in the land where pike and skies don't mix (WI). On a side note I believe this is the first year they will be sampling to compare survival of Leech Lake vs. Upper Chippewa strain fish, should be interesting.

Bass season won't be open though so I guess I'll have to start the year thinning out my lakes overabundant crappies. Part of your fishing technique should not be "Is a crappie going to hit this presentation before it gets to my target species?"
