ok - so i think i'll give smelt a try for Tip-ups and northerns -- i found frozen smelt in the local store -- the guts have been cleaned out and the head has been chopped off - do you think these will still work - as good as a whole smelt? -- thanks

Try Kowalski's or Lund's for whole smelt. Otherwise call around to some of the local bait shops. I've been finding it at Mike's this year and Blue Ribbon had it last year. The problem I've had with grocery store smelt is it has been on the small side.

Slightly off-topic: did anyone else see the story about smelt fishing on CBS's Sunday morning show 1/26? Apparently in Maine they angle for smelt one at a time with a hook and line! How do they find time to drink?
