Reinforcement transom

I have 1973 14' Aluma Craft boat, the piece of wood behind the boat (where motor clamp onto) is rotton. The old one looks like a piece of 1 1/4" solid wood, it is as wide as the boat and as deep as the boat.

What type of wood should i use, and does it have to be the same size as the old one?

Hi...

I think I know what you are talking about... its the piece of wood that is on the outside of the transom...not the core of the transom itself.

Any type of wood will do just fine, just make sure you seal it well on all sides. The best possible you could get would be treated plywood, but give it a good stain and seal and you're all set to go. Remove old board, cut new one to size, and replace. If you can save the old board, you can use it as a template for screws.

When you go to install the new board, be sure to squeeze some silicone sealer into the holes before attatching the screws. This will help seal the inner core of the transom from water.

If you go with the green treat, make SURE its the new PTMC treated wood and not the ACQ. The latter will eat right through the aluminum.
