Down to Earth
Sorry for yet another post requesting grill feedback, but I want to make sure I make the right choice as I want this to be my "grill of a lifetime". I've looked at 3 nice gas grill options in the Vermont Casting, Broilmaster, and Holland. Was intrigued by the Traeger wood pellet grill and now today I looked at a Big Green Egg and really like what I saw in it. Can anyone give me feedback on it? Though I started out looking to go Gas as that is what I had, I'm starting to move towards the non gas options and right now it is between the Traeger and Big Green Egg.Thanks.Andy
Jim Almquist
The person you need to ask only because without the search function it takes awhile to find his post is thirdeye The guy cooks up some good stuff on his and it sounds like my next grill so I hope he chimes in and post some of the stuff he has made. folke2000
My neighbor owns 3 famous daves retuarants, and has the Green egg both at home and his cabin. Never used one, but he swears by it. Hope this helps.

Down to Earth
Thirdeye,Man, too bad this update took away much of this thread. Anyways, I haven't gotten to the Primo dealer yet here in town as they are closed until next week. Been checking out the websites, and the Primo site really puts a good argument out there against the Egg, though the Egg brochure I have at home is pretty convincing as well. Granted I have no experience cooking this way, but how do you cook using indirect heat with the egg? The Primo has the divider in it. Also, what dictates whether your going to use an direct or indirect of cooking.Thanks.Andy
thirdeye
Andy, I noticed the missing posts too, I could not log in for a couple of days either. Yes, the primo has a divider in the firebox. For indirect cooking, BGE uses an item called a plate setter, which forms a heat barrier. It resembles a pizza stone only it has 3 legs on it. It rests on the fire ring (legs up) and the grate sits atop it. There is enough room for a drip pan to sit on the plate setter. I know it's hard to see, but here is a plate setter with legs up and a drip pan, then a grate (with chicken on it), a clip on grate is above that (with the fatties, smoked breakfast sausage). If you set it on the fire ring as shown (legs down) it is a platform for a pizza stone or a shelf for a casserole dish.
