Newbie lure question: Buckshot rattle rig

The picture below is close to what I have. I just picked it up after hearing a lot of it on these forums and I have a question. Do you put bait on the treble hook? I've heard it go both ways.

Do I just put it on my deal and jig? Do I put a minnow head on one of the three hooks?

Thanks!

I generally will tip it with a minnow head. But I have used them without as well. An on occasion I will use a whole minnow. Really comes down to conditions and what you are after. If the fish are very aggressive, a whole minnow works, not so much for less aggressive fish. Then I tip with minnow head.

You can also tie a short leader, 3 to 5 inches long using a Mustad lure snap or No Knot Fast Snap at one end, and either a treble or regular hook at the other end.

Will allow a whole minnow to swim freely, while using the spoon for flash and an anchor point. It helps when the fish are more neutral and not so aggressive.

You got yourself a nice lure! I love the Buckshots and I see you have the Rattlin' Flyer which is new this year. I picked up a few myself.

As you said, take the sinker off since they have enough weight to do the job. I generally tip mine with a minnow head and jig pretty aggressively to lure them in and then twitch it a little to help them commit. The Buckshot is my go-to lure and I've had success with them on perch and walleye. Go get'm!

A monster lure for perch up on Winnie (and other places). We use a short dropper hook under them, tipped with a minnow head (and we also use the tails when the fish are aggressive...and they'll hit anything). The dropper makes for better hooksets in my opinion, and also allows us to upsize the lures when we need to call the fish in and get their attention from a distance. The Buckshot is the top lure for this, in my opinion.

Glad to hear you took off the bobber and sinker. I almost always run a little more than just the minnow's head, myself, ripping them about in half, but yes you do hook them on one of the trebles. I like to go through the bottom of the mouth and come out the forehead area, but if you go through the forehead first they tangle on the other hooks less often.
