Huntin&Fishin
Did any one else get the jan./Feb. issue and see that MN has lost 42% of wetlands since the mid 80's.WOW! We have to do something.
carpshooterdeluxe
quit buying ethanol for your car! jk. tiling, drainage ditches, crop insurance, better fertilizers/chemicals/farming technology; its all had its impact on waterfowl production and water quality of the remaining wetlands. farmers have to make a living and in many years it has required plowing every available acre they can. my family included. thankfully we are doing a small part by restoring some of our wetlands and utilizing the wrp and crep programs. now if the weather would just co-operate and give us some rains to keep those restored wetlands actually wet in late summer! Hammer Handle
My advice, promote and support people who do NOT develop lakeshore. They should get great tax breaks. Also, do what I did two years ago. Get a permit, and build a pond.
Quackaddict9
Quote:Also, do what I did two years ago. Get a permit, and build a pond. How did it work out? Did you add duck/geese food plot before water was put in? Any attracts to the birds?
Bowfin
One interesting note - The wetland loss is not equally distributed across the state. St. Louis County for instance still has over 85-90% of its presettlement wetlands. Problem is, this doesn't help ducks much as NE Minnesota isn't in the flyway and the wetlands found here are not the fertile "duck producing" praire wetlands found in the western part of the state.
