Woody,

I haven't taslked to my usual contacts out there yet this year. But if you call the Black Hill national Forest office and ask to talk to one of the rangers they are usually pretty good folks to talk to and have a good idea of the current turkey situation and location.

Generally the application info comes out the end of January or the first part of February. It's a formality and about a 5-8 day turn around depending on the mail.

I'd like to plan a trip to the hills this spring and bowhunt some turks as well... If anyone has done the trip before - I'd like to hear ya any advice you could give. Send me an email if you prefer. Sounds like 1 tag in the b.h.'s unit and lots of public land. We'd like to do it camping style and hunt from camp each day. Also where would be the best place to obtain a detailed map?

The Black Hills is a national forest and the map available is awsome. Not sure exactly where to get it, but shouldn't take too much searching to find one. It is something like 1.3 million acres and you can camp most anywhere.

Good luck.

You can get a nice map at any of the forest service offices or even a bicycle shop. Those maps have all the little roads and trails that you'll need. The forest is very well marked and offers plenty of public land to hunt.
