Morson Reports for the new year

Recommended Posts

Wish I could've helped out. frown.gif We're supposed to be heading up Jan 3rd for 4 or 5 days. laugh.gif I've been scouring the web for any info. It'll be good to hear something concrete from a trusted source, but I'll have to make up my mind prior to this info.

I was up on Christmas day out for a ride with my dad. We put on about 65 miles, left Morson and headed east in the Sabaskong area, made a swing back north to Hay Island then over to the south end of Miles bay. Even found a 5pt antler shed that was out on the ice. There was a lot of slush and seen quite a few holes like 3-5 foot across in the ice, almost like they were kept open by draining water or a spring, but it was enough to make me keep an eye out for them. Maybe back in the bays the slush was the deepest. Seen a couple guys fishing just out of Morson but we didnt go and talk to them. there is enough snow to run a sled and it does get a little rough when you hit the frozen slush. I hope to get up there on sunday and hook up with Wildthing for an afternoon and tell him where his secret spot is. Be safe out there! B-dude

No fishing, just riding over the New Year. We ran up to Boot Bay over the islands and back to Turtle through Whitefish on Monday. A little slushy in spots but the riding was good. Heard reports of pretty good fishing off of the reefs west of Morson.

Just back from six fantastic days in camp!

Ice: 18-20 inches thick

Slush: Almost none, some in back bays and on the river but none on the main lake.

Snow: About a foot on the level now, enough for trucks to get stuck on the ice in drifts.

Ice ridges: A couple small ones, and one was growing.

Walleyes: Biting at about 17 feet on the reefs. Caught small ones Thursday and Friday, bigger ones saturday and very nice ones sunday and monday, biggest was about 24 inches. Several 14-17 inchers. Ate a meal and brought home limits.

Fishing seemed better early in afternoon, although that can change fast. very little bite at sunset.

My longest ice fishing trip ever. Weather was great, highs about 20. Couple inches of new snow on Sunday.

Hated to come back!

P.S. Just got word there is less ice (10-12 inches) and much more slush on Whitefish Bay, but still passable by snow machine.

Where the heck is everyone? This is the fewest Morson reports I've seen in the 3 years watching this site...

Any new reports? I'm looking for some hard information here, not speculation!!!! We're heading up Thursday night and will post when I get back, but it doesn't seem like anyone is paying any attention here!

Well, at least some people are watching here, but it seems no one is actually fishing!

I'll report back on Monday when we return. We'll probably focus on eyes since it was so good last time and they're only five minutes from camp. Maybe try lakers, but it's a long run for fewer fish.

Take care all!

P.S. Has anyone heard if this HSOforum ever plans to go to geographic zones within Canada for posts? There's just too many different areas on here to sort through all the posts....

Great weather, lots of fish!

We had 3 good days of fishing. Three of us caught more than 150 walleyes. Nothing big, but 4 or 5 fish in the 23-25'' class. They were biting on most all the reefs, it seems. Not bad for the doldrums of January!

We had 10, 20 and 30 above for high temps each day. Glad we picked the right weekend as the weather is turning nasty already, back down to near 30 below by Wednesday morning!

Lots of people out on Saturday and Sunday... Plenty of ice, about 24 inches, and there are a couple roads plowed. We used snow machines for mobility and the snow is hard packed and bumpy on the drifts. Can't go more than about 25 mph without getting beat up.

Benelli Dude's dad fished Dogpaw Lake for trout on Saturday and got a few.

No crappie reports that I heard. Too many walleyes to catch.

Home for a few weeks then back up!

Take care all!!

Finally got up for an overnight on the island & what a terrific trip! Only fished for a few hours each day in 1 spot that produces well in open water but saw lots of eyes and had more big fish on in a few hours than I ever remember doing through the ice.

Problem was we were not able to close the deal on a lot of the big ones and a 25" was the biggest through the hole.

Fantastic weather but had to cut trip short because of this blow coming in. Found 18-20" of ice and only a couple of damp looking spots in the 10 miles out to Miles Bay. Cut a couple of miles of tracks through about 6" of unmarked powder between islands. BEAUTIFUL!

Can't wait to get back up!

A group of six of us fished Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I am still figuring out the patterns for successfully fishing Walleyes during Winter and the luck myself and my group had showed it. We got a few Walleyes and perch. Sunday and Monday we went up in to Whitefish to xchase Lakers. We got more Northerns than Lakers but two of our Lakers were pretty decent, including my personal best, a 16.75 pounder. Man do those things fight!

Eastwind, just think mid-summer reefs! They have been all over the reefs this winter. 17 feet under the ice nearest the deep water...

glow spoons work great tipped with a minnowhead

My buddies used Salmo Chubbie darters with very good luck, they are big body jigging lures, but they cost $7 each and I won't spend that much...

We have found walleyes on every reef we've tried, even new ones we've never fished before..

good luck!

Thanks W.T. Some of the locals Ken, Oliver and Clarence, who I think you know, sent me out to the reefs and suggested 18' to 20'. I put our group on several different reefs to the West and Northwest of were you come out of Elanor Lake. We did "OK" but did not kill them as I thought we would. Oh well, when you don't get 'em you most likelly get smarter for the next trip.
