Top portables for spearing.

I have always put out a hard sided house for spearing. I find now the poor old shack is in need of a match. I have a Mankato house (suitcase style) that I have used for spearing but it gets old having to wrestle it around and set up the frame work up. I was wondering if anyone had what they considered a top line portable house that works slick for spearing. Little wind flap,dark,easy setup, pretty much sums up what I am looking for. I always liked the hard hoses as far a quiet went but these days it just seems you are looking for trouble leaving a house out overnight. Any tips, comments, or recommendations welcome. Thanks!

i use a canvas collapsable house. i can set it up about as fast as setting up in a clam and its not all that heavy.

If you have a Mankato EZ-set, preferably an older one, you already have the best. What size are you using? I have a couple 4x6's and they work great, but are a bit heavy. The 4x5's that they used to make were hard to beat. Not too heavy and fast easy set up. One more thing though, is that the older houses had a softer duck canvas and that was much nicer than the stiff stuff on newer houses. It breathed better, and was quieter. I have used sunflowers in them for many years with no problems. Don't know that I'd want to do that in the newer houses. Good luck.

Yes it is an EZ set, I am thinking the 4x6. It is about 10-12 years old. It is ok when it is set up but then you always have to re set it up at home after the trip and dry out the canvas. I was thinking about one of the new flip over houses like the Frabill R2-Tec. Please keep the responses coming. I am listening.

I have used my Otter Magnum Lodge. It works ok, could be a little darker, but easy to set up, has a door so you can bank it in, etc. You need to be creative on how you hang your decoy, and I tie my spear to my leg. It probably isn't the best solution, but for a fishing house that is occasionally used as a dark house, I would say it is acceptable. I am new to this spearing thing so keep that in mind when reading my post.

I just recieved my Canvas Craft Northlander, and man its flippen awesome. I had a mankato for years, and love it, but i can tell you this, CC house is amazing. I got it with the black canvas, and one door. The setup is simple, where you have to place three polls in the inside of the house, and two on the end.

I would higly recommand getting on, there worth the money, and your going to be very happy with it.

I agree with Bass N Spear, The one thing that I really like about the Canvas Craft Northlander spear houses that he didn’t talk about is the size. They are built for a guy who likes to go out and sit all day long and be very comfortable. They are built with a lot of room in them, I hate having to sit in a house and not be able to move around.(because your heater and everything else is in the way) They are the perfect size for two people also, I would also take some time and look into them.

Bass N Spear which house did you get ? They look good. The house with the NorpacR2 sounds like the one to have.

I have used a medium Otter sled with the Canvas Craft black canvas and frame (Otterskin) for a flip-up style. It is easier to set up and transport than my old Mankato house. I sit on a chair on top of the ice on a rubber mat. The sunflower heater goes in the tub. The Norpac fabric is white inside so that won't work.

The NorPac insulation is the real deal... I have it on my CC double flip. The only draw back would be for spearing, unless they came out with a new color option, the NorPac houses are white on the inside. But you can heat 'em with a candle!
