Last Chance ML Hunt in 157

Recommended Posts

Howdy All...

I'll be heading out shortly for a "almost last chance" hunt in area 157. I'd have been up there already if it hadn't been for prior obligations... frown.gif

After checking the weather report, the current wind direction, unfortunately, does not favor any of my stand locations. However, I have two spots that I'm going to try mid day with some ultra slow stalking. Maybe, with a little luck, I can catch one napping. If I don't score there, I'll be off to a stand on a travel route between a THICK bedding area and a small patch of corn that's still up. Providing the wind direction changes just a bit.

I've got two tags to fill, and thus far the ol' Moose Hunter is battin' ZERO. frown.gif It's a cold one out there and freezer is still empty. Cross your fingers for me boys, I REALLY don't want to have a mac and cheese winter!!

Good Luck to you Moose-hunter! It should be a good experience to be hunting in this old Minnesota snow. If that standing corn you found is being used by the deer, your chances are great.

And if the deer aren't using the corn, grab some ears for yourself as corn of the cob is way better than Mac n cheese! smile.gif

Thanks Jameson!! I'd have been grabbing some corn if we actually had access to the field itself. It's on an adjacent property that is totally off limits to us "evil" hunters.

As I found out, these old beat-up knees are NOT up to trudging through 12+ snow!! In fact, after my two small slow stalks, I didn't feel comforatble enough to chance a trip up into the stand. I ended up sitting in some available cover about 20 yards off the trail leading to the corn... NOT ONE DEER WAS SEEN DURING LEGAL SHOOTING TIMES! I was about a half hour late getting back to the truck and my buddy was almost ready to come looking for me on the wheeler. In reality, I kind of doubt even the wheeler would have made it very far in that deep snow.

On our way out, we counted well over a dozen deer either crossing the dirt road in front of us or out in the fields. We even had a DANDY six pointer trotting, in the ditch, right along side the truck before we hit the main highway. Big bodied with a nice tall, wide rack!! Could have been an 8, however neither one of us could see any brow tines through the darkness...

The deer are there. No doubt about that. The problem is that (IMHO) they have all gone completely nocturnal. I believe ANY movement during the daylight hours is next to nothing or where it's too dang thick to hunt. Have ya been into the heart of a red willow swamp lately? shocked.gif That's some thick stuff right there!!!

All things considered... The muzzle loading season is probably over for me and my cobbed up knees. frown.gif On a brighter side, I still have access to some land, south of the cities, that the owner has restricted to "bow only". With my "favorite" stand being only a couple hundred yards off an access road! So there's still hope...

Well, get out there with the stick and string then. I'm sure the next time your out there the biggest deer of your life is going to walk out in front of you!!!

Mac and cheese gets real old, fast. It is cheaper then hunting venison, but you get what you pay for. Moose-hunter don't let the deer beat you this year. Keep after them!

Just to remind you of what your missing. My processor just called, so my summer sausage, slim johns, and polish are ready for pick-up. They'll be placed in the freezer with the home-made burger and breakfast sausage.

Get out there! Good Luck!
