Snow plow on a S-10

I have a 2000 Chevy S-10 4X4 that I would like to use for a plow truck. Has anyone put a plow on one before and has it worked out allright? I don't see to many S-10's with plows so thats why I am asking. I would be using it just for driveways and small lots. Also, what is the best plow out there? I have always seen Boss and Western.

I thought about putting one on my Ranger when I was in MT but I never got around to it mainly because i wasn't sure it could handle it. THen when I moved to Duluth, I found out my landlord has one on his and I see him use it all the time. He doesn't seem to have any issues with it and I would think the S-10 wouldn't either for small jobs like driveways.

Saw one the other day doing a parking lot. I don't plow with a truck, but I would imagine a smaller truck would be more maneuverable (sp). The heavier trucks handle the big plows better because of the heavier suspension. As long as you don't go too big, it will probably work great.

I would suggest a Western myself. I have always heard good things about them.

Also, remember to get a liability insurance to do business. A friend of mine ended up paying big because he didn't know about getting seperate insurance for his plowing business.

If your just looking to plow small amounts of stuff, and dont drive the truck much it will work. The problems you will end up with is if this is your every day driver, this thing will rust badly, the front suspension will drag, balljoints will be worn in no time. If this is a spare vehicle that will just sit with the plow on it all winter, and you arent going to be driving it more then 5 miles for plowing, go ahead. Otherwise, it wont take long to weeken the front springs with the plow on it, and if you hit a dip with the plow on, the plow can catch the road, and can be dangerous. Best bet would be to buy an old 80s 3/4 ton truck slap a plow on it. Use it only for plowing.

Biff -

You can put a 6-6 1/2' plow on there no problem.

Just take it off when you're not using it.

Your biggest problem is going to be finding a mount to put on your truck.

You can email me if you want, [email protected] and I'll pass the phone number along of my dealer. I know a couple weeks ago he had a Meyers that he was looking to move.

A truck store on Hwy 65 and Blaine/Ham Lake (right at the turn off for Majestic Oaks Gold course) had small plastic plows for 1/2 tons. Mounts, controls and about 12" or a little higher plastic (something close, but strong) and a metal blade at bottom. Its been a couple years since I was looking at them, but they where not bad priced at all. If I remember correct, total package was under a grand.

They had it on display on an F-150. On stock susp., did not even squat front end when up in air.

I would be careful plowing with an S-10. I think that most of the small trucks that have plows on them are toyotas which have much heavier drive and suspension parts than most American vehicles. I did a little work on an S-10 that had been used for a plower and discussed it at length with the owner. He did not have any problems with the vehicle until he got comfortable with the plow. then he tried to push heaver and frozen snow and left the plow on when driving. Once he stopped being concious about the vehicle he was using and started plowing like it was a full size he started to have extra wear and breakage of front end parts.

Anyway, I dont think that a plow is a bad idea on an s-10 as long as you take it easy and remember you are driving an s-10 not a tank.

I put a Blizzard plow on my '95 S-10 Blazer three years ago. The vehicle has been demoted to only a plow vehicle, I only use it to plow my property.

If you plan on driving your S-10 every day, you will need to invest in some front end parts as mentioned in an earlier post.

I did have issues when I would drive down the road with the plow attached to the truck. The plow would block the air from getting into the engine and the vehicle would overheat.

I choose to put the plow on the S-10 vs a truck because the vehicle is smaller and is easy to maneuver. However you do lose ground clearance, which is needed when you get 12+ inches of snow pilling up. I have got stuck a couple times trying to back plow.
