Fish Trap Scout Runner Kit

I was wondering what you all think about the fish trap scout runner kit. Do you think it is worth the money? Does it work effectively? I am thinking of going longer distances with my scout this year maybe 5-10 miles behind my snowmobile and most likely cross a few roads also. Would the runners hold up to some pavement? thanks for your help!

If they are anything like the runners that go on the Otter Sleds, I would say they are worth it. They will help to keep the bottom of your sled from wearing through and keep it tracking straight behind your snowmobile. Good luck!

I still believe the scout is the best portable out there. But the only down fall is that even with the runners I wouldn't pull that sled any long distances and expect it to last long. Believe me I have burned through a few of them. You have to make a rack on your atv/snowmobile or pull them on a small trailer if you want to go long distances with them. The sled isn't durable enough, but for that reason the weight of it I believe makes it's the best portable out there. Your able to hole hop and move so much more because of the light weight.

That is very true i as well love my scout im glad i put in the extra money to get this one over some other brands. Very Nice! I was thinking about building a rack but i dont know cuz then i dont know where i would put my auger and i would have to make one that is detachable because i do a lot of trail riding on my snow mobile too. Any ideas on how you would make one would be nice. I have a polaris classic 500 i man just to let ya know,

Ryan,

I'm building one for my Indy 500EFI. Hope to have it finished in the next couple of weeks. It has a place for the auger and it's removable for non-fishing use. As soon as I get it finished & installed, I'll post some pics.....

Here's what I have so far. Maybe it will give you some ideas to get started....

This part will stay mounted to the sled. The next part...the part that I'm building right now...mounts on top of this with quick release pins. It will be big enough to hold my Rover 1.5. Stay tuned....

I just installed the Clam runner kit on my Scout today.

It was an easy installation, took about an hour.

Worth the $30 in my opinion. smirk.gif

I think it will really help save in the wear and tear on the sled.

The sled is pretty thin, it would not take much travel for it to wear thru without the runners.

I put a runner kit on my voyager the other day and was really disappointed when I opened the package. I was thinking if Clam was making a kit for one purpose only it would be specially designed.

Munchy I really liked what you did. That's what I will be replacing the runner kit I purchased with probably pretty soon (they aren't very thick and you can see where they will wear out).

It took me about 1 1/2 hours, used the 30 bolts and a heat gun to get the moldings to bend. The kit will definately protect the sled but just isn't designed to last especially for the $45.

cRaPpiEMaN8265,

What I do is pull my Snowmobile on the one place trailer, and I put a hitch on the Snowmobile. Pull the snowmobile off the trailer and attach the trailer to the snowmobile. I have an Artic Cat Pantera 2 Up so this way I can fit two scouts on the trailer and 2 people on the snowmobile. I two would still like to make a rack for when I'm by myself. More important I want to get the auger on a rack in front of the snowmobile so it doesn't bounce around as much.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
