hey did anybody actually read the article and see where all those guys were from. I was hunting in that area this year and i can tell you that it is run by an outfitter, Not one of those guys in the picture were from MN or even close to MN. they were all over the country.

I believe the article said that they were all related and hunting on family land. I don't recall reading anything about paying the landowners except for $500 goes to the land owner where the heaviest doe came from.

realtower, Maybe your confusing my Zone 1 season with other parts of the state where you have two seasons, a Bucks Only and Doe Only Season. We have one season up here in Zone 1 not two.

When I refer to Bucks Only Season thats it period, there is no lottery for Doe permits because the deer herd is recovering from an other devastating winter kill.

Right now we have Intensive Harvest Management.

So as you can see we can go from feast to famine up here when it comes to deer numbers. With that change in the herd we change how we hunt and what we shoot.

6000 acres tied up between a family of hunters. THats a lot of acreage. I would hope that there would be some nice bucks in that area. QDM isn't for everyone. I like seeing large bucks, but I like to hunt. Where I hunt, I'm starting to see some of signs of whats to come if we get really big bucks. Land will start getting leased to the highest bidder, more and more state land will get pressured. We will have pockets like the 6000 acres where its a large buck sanctuary, and then the state land will get pounded. The quality in the sanctuary will go up, where as the public land will go down. In my opinion, that doesn't sound very good for future deer hunters.

I think we should raise the price for non-resident hunters. I like Iowa's $400 for a tag. I think it would help keep some of the people trying to lease out and keep some of the large MN deer in. Before people start saying that I'm wrong, you should know that my brother lives in Wisconsin, we have hunted together for 20 years, if the price got jacked up, he wouldn't be able to deer hunt here any more. That said, I still think it should cost more for nonresidents.

O.K. guys, my bad for throwing the spoon in the pot and then leaving for a couple days. I just thought it was a cool story about what can happen when all the stars align. I figured the QDM debate ran its course already this year.

But it did clear up another one of MY misconceptions. I thought 150 inches was the magic number since so many people use that as a benchmark for trophy antler status. Thats the number I would like to hit before I can't hunt anymore. If thats not B&C, thats O.K., I don't care if my name is in a book. I know it'll make P&Y with my bow, but again, its just my personal goal.

I think you guys defined that "slippery slope" comment I posted on the "DNR-good job" thread. Basically, more deer-easier to manage. Less deer-harder to be selective. All areas of the state cannot support the same herd status and antler growth capabilities.

When I hunt in Zone 1, its so my daughter can hunt safely on private property with a bigger group of friends and we can use rifles. She gets 3 weekends to enjoy the season instead of 2 or 3 days. I hunt elsewhere if I want to shoot alot of deer or have a better chance at a big guy. Sometimes that happens in Zone 1, but not always.

Actually, cool as that picture is, my first thought was: If that happened EVERY year to my party, deer hunting would lose its luster after awhile. I like the chase of a dream and to pick up some great meat along the way.

Now if I sound two sided, that may be. But there are two sides (and more) to every story.

I was hunting in that area this year and i can tell you that it is run by an outfitter, Not one of those guys in the picture were from MN or even close to MN. they were all over the country. So remember that if an outfitter pays enough money to have land owners not hunt their own land and plant crops that benifit him, big buck like this get killed. unfortunetly thats just not going to happen and nor would i EVER allow another person to try and pay me money to stay off my land. I saw and passed on over ten bucks this year and that was two weekends of hunting and not one day has gone by that i haven't regretted it. So now anything with antlers will work.

actually those guys in the picture are all related in some way. my uncle grew up with them and knows most of them. they weren't hunting with an outfitter or paying one. it's just alot of land owners that practice QDM. all of them hunt their own land and i do believe some of them share their land with the neighbors but i am not possitive. also they do have a big doe contest also. check out their HSOforum it's www.hillviewmanagement.com

I actually have some land in that area and there are alot more people that are not members but also practice QDM in the same general area. It is a great place to hunt. I havent been able to get a pig yet but its only a matter of time. I guess i never really realized how fortunate I am to be have such a place to hunt.
