loud pipes???

My family lives on the north side of town ontop of a large hill. The water tower of course is on the south side of town....needless to say the water pressure would be less the adequate if we didnt have a water pump. We have been in the house for 3 years and this fall is the first time we noticed that when this pump kicks on the pipes are noisier than before. I am thinking it could be the time of year where everything gets cold and constricts...but just wondering if there is a way to "stabalize" the pipes so they dont make so much noise. The pump is a Goulds. and the pressure setting is at 27. any help would be great.

Thanks

Joe

When you say loud, what do you mean? When the pump comes on are they actually moving from the initial shock and hitting each other? If so, they need to be braced and a stand pipe should be installed on the pump outlet.

If it's water hammer, then the fix is also at least one stand pipe at the outlet of your pump. I like stand pipes at every faucet but that may be difficult for you to install if your house is finished.

sorry should have clarified "loud"...the pipes are vibrating when the pump turns on. not banging into one another....just vibrating. When i grab the pipe(s) with my hand the vibrating drops considerably..almost to nothing. thanks for the response hope this helps

Another fix would be a pressure relief tank installed on cold water pipe just before the water heater, this is also for water hammer. Is your pressure pump in good condition? did it do this before? if not the pump may have worn bushings and vibrating.Presure relief tank takes the place of standing pipe---Just a space for pressure to expand and contract with abrupt pressure changes (water on then off)

Google it.(Water Hammer)
