South Dakota and dog health certificates???

I've been going to SoDak pheasant hunting for 6-7 years and have been checked by CO's a number of times but have only been asked about my license, not dog health certificates. Whats your experience been? I've never bothered to get one from my local vet but now a friend was telling that I really need to have one or I could lose my SoDak hunting privleges for a few years....

I've never heard that..I use to have to get one to go to Canada, but that's Canada a you need a permit to blow your nose..I had no Idea you needed a health cert. for So Dak. That's news to me...They are simple enough to get just make an appointment with your vet..It's just another added expense in already expensive trip

If you go to the SD Game and Fish Department and look at the hunting regs you will find the following:

"Dog Requirements

Dogs being brought into South Dakota are required

to have a health certificate from their local

veterinarian indicating that all shots are up-to-date

and they are disease-free animals. Dog owners

who have any questions concerning requirements

may call the Animal Industry Board at 605-773-

3321."

So nobody has answered the question, have you ever been asked for your dog vet papers? If yes, what did the CO have to say if you didn't have them?

I can say I have not been stopped or asked in ND, but I do carry my papers.

It will ultimately be up to the particular CO your dealing with. They can give you a ticket if they want to....whether they would or not is up to them....I personally doubt they would just for not having your papers. If I recall correctly I have read of people being asked for them...but I don't remember the outcome.

Should be easy to resolve....your vet should give you the dogs papers each time you get the dog updated so why not just throw them in the truck (along with emergency vet info for the area you are hunting!).

Otherwise I guess there is a chance you could get pinched for it.

I talked to my vet yesterday. The main difference between MN and SoDak is that MN requires rabies shot every two years where SoDak requires it every year. One of my two dogs is good to go, it got the shot this spring, but the other one would need a rabies shot according to SoDak requirements.

At this point I'm just going to say to heck with it, I'm heading for SoDak in three days, next spring when I take the dogs in for their spring shots and checkup I'll get them up to SoDak requirements and get the paperwork.

You don't need to have your dogs vaccinated once a year to meet the SD requirements. You just have to make sure the expiration date on the dogs current vaccination is listed on the papers you bring.....which it should be.

So.....you just need to get the papers faxed to you and you should be set. If you don't.....most likely you wont run into any issues anyways......but there's always a chance.

Nothing in the South Dakota Hunting Regs, Animal Industry Board, or Statutes gives any indication that there must be an annual vaccination. See information below from those sources:

Thanks 311Hemi! Good info!!! After several calls to my vet and a call to that number in SoDak, I finally convinced my vet to give me the certificate. Where the confusion arose was that SoDak used to req. rabies every year but now they allow it for three years if the Health cert. lists the expiration date.

Thanks!

This portion of the law seems to state that:

and that it

has been currently vaccinated for rabies by a veterinarian within the year immediately preceding

the date of importation by a licensed veterinarian

Good Luck!
