Did anyone have any luck? I shot my buck friday afternoon but couldn't find a doe to save my life the last two days. I did see a couple other bucks that I could have taken but that is usually how it goes.

I was amazed at how some people hunt in the area that I'm in, unless it is the norm to have one of the posting spots in the pickup with the engine running just in case a deer gets by the posters so you can chase after it and take shots off the road. This is only my second year hunting in ND with a rifle but it still amazed me. I don't see how you could be proud of a deer that you shot if you had to chase it down with a chevy and unload your gun at it. I hope these people don't call themselves hunters because if that is the definition of a hunter I don't want to be one. Sorry for the rant. I hope everyone had a good time without any accidents.

My party went 10 for 11. I shot a smaller 4X4 on Fri night. Not a great buck but I will take it.

On the topic of hunter ethics I have a rant as well. We have a spot that we hunt every year. We don't own it and it isn't posted just to be clear on this so our rights to this land are any different that anyone else. So on Fri we planned to be there at 10 am to secure the spot. Well we were too late and there was another party there with a black ford king ranch pickup. So we went with a back up plan and had a great day although we didn't end up with much. So Sat I decide I would get up early and get to this spot so we could hunt it at day light. So I was there by about 5:45 and we were the first one at this spot for the day. We caught a little nap in the truck. My buddies arrived shortly there after. We were sitting there talk and getting ready to start the day. When all of a sudden about 7am here comes a black king ranch it blows right past our three trucks that were full of hunters. It went right into the yard. My buddy when to see what was going on and just to make sure they didn't have some other kind of arrangement with the land owner. When he got there 2 hunters were already pretty much running into the woods. A third was still at the truck my buddy said "hey" not in a mean way he just wanted to find out what there deal was. This guy was about 10 feet away. He didn't even acknowledge my friend just turned away and hustled into the woods. Now that really teed me off but what do you do. They weren't doing anything wrong since it wasn't posted. But I just really thought it was poor hunting ethics. Oh well we got our deer anyhow. We ended up getting in there in the afternoon on Sat and pulled 2 does out of there.

I have more of a problem with people doing junk like this that a good old deer chase. We also ran into hunters hunting posted land that we were the only party that had permission to be one. They had the balls to say they had talked to the owner and they were ok to be there. We checked with the owner and yes we were to only ones he was letting in there until our tags were filled.

People like that take the fun out of hunting for me.

We had a very good hunt overall. 7 deer for 5 guys with two 8 pointers and a seven. For me, not so well. I saw 4 monsters right away friday around 2 to 4pm. I missed one at approx 250 yards on the dead run. I saw many bucks after that but I could not get my self to shot anything smaller than a 5x5 and never saw any of them again.

I guess I will need to go north again. My son shot a very nice 8 pointer with his bow Friday morning but it wont make P&Y because of lack of mass by a few inches.

We never had a chance to get after the bucks this past weekend, so I went out and chased the pheasants instead. I walked a spot that I had prior success for almost three hours with no birds. I called an audible and tried a different spot that had cattle on it a few weeks back but they had been since moved out, so I had a good feeling that nobody had been in there hunting yet.

Five minutes and three shots later:

I went back there yesterday morning before the wind started gusting and bagged two more. Ended up with seven for the weekend and wished I had tried this spot earlier in my trip, but it was still fun to have had the chance to get the birds that I did. The wind forecast yesterday for ND was for gusts up to 60mph so I packed up and let the wind blow me on back to MN.

Made my yearly trip out to ND. I wasn't after deer, just the elusive rooster laugh.gif

Our party just got back earlier this week and had a good hunt. We were out for 3 full days, with 22 roosters to boot.

The report would be better had we shot a little better.

Most of the roosters were in the light/heavy sloughs, but one evening we did find them in CRP cover.

I can't believe the number of birds out there, just unreal! One spot produced 10 hens that were holding in a piece of grass that was the size of a stop sign. AMAZING!!

Hoping that the hunting is good next year!
