Best Tool to use-installing deadbolt

Scott M

Question

So the house my wife and I moved into has deadbolt locks and keys but no hole for the deadbolt to slide into. I have the frame that goes over the hole, but am wondering what tool I should use to create the hole.

I know this is vague and undescriptive but I am mechanically uninclined to a great extent (I think I've posted about 10 questions in this forum and provided 0 answers...apparently others are here to help me. grin.gifgrin.gif)

Thanks for any help.

I forgot about the (Contact Us Please)'s Guide to Home Repair book I have. Well, I need a chisel. I guess I was thinking it would take something harder. I've got a few of those in the box....

But there was a good tip. Use lipstick or toothpaste to mark where the bolt comes out and then put the frame around that.

Any other tips appreciated...

Look for a boring kit at big box homeimprovement store It'll have instructions with it. Are your doors metal clad? if so it makes it harder to mortise out the dead bolt bolt inset but a knife and sharp chisel will work.If ya need some more advice I'll try to help, through email or here, but explaining if ya have no idea may be difficult. But start with the kit just a cheep one! It should clamp on to door edge and have a 2 inch hole bit, check your dead bolt some are 1&3/4". Just reread the throw bolt is a 7/8s bit, bore the hole insert bolt with lock removed trace around bolt face and chisel out to depth of plate.
