grunt call, how loud?

I see on the forums that people are using both grunt and can calls, how loud do u grunt, real soft or real hard when trying to lure in a unseen deer, not knowing if there is one in the area or not.

seriously, I dunno, just don't goose honk it.

I often play the buck tube for the hell of it when I'm watching deer within rnge that i've decided to pass on. I wanna see how they react to the calls so I hit the call, point it right at them & hit it loud... most of the time I get nothing, they don't even slow down or show any indication that they have heard it.

I have called in curious does with the grunt tube... had that work for me several times... i've talked back to bucks out of my sight trying to lure them & later wished I was more persistant & louder cause they were looking for me, just couldn't locate me.

I'm still learning, but I don't grunt very loud.

I was watching this drury dream season video. Every time they're going to arrow a buck, they give a little "bah" with their mouth.

The bucks stop instantly, to figure out where the sound came from, then they release their shot.

The one buck kept going. So he does a louder "bah", still kept going... still louder "bah"... still kept going...

so finally the shooter says "HEY!!!!" really loud... funny as sh.t... the buck stops right there.

It's weird how curious some of them are, and spooky others are.

That same video, the one guy shoots a buck, and as he is approaching the down buck, a 2nd buck is sparring with the dead buck, and despite the hunters efforts, won't leave...

That video also, some bucks responded to some sort of tru-talker type grunt call. Some did not. One that didn't... they used this snort-wheez call.... that buck came charging in, hair standing up... he was ready to fight.

I have had good dear hunters tell me, they'll make a ton of racket. Shake the living hell out of bushes, scrape the leaves on the ground with a rack, rattle hard, intermix several grunts, it's the f'n nut rut band... I've seen a guy do it on tv too. Amazing results.

I've tried it a couple times like that... just got sweaty. lol.

About a week before firearms opener last year I was on the bow stand and heard a tremendous racket in the brush about 75 yards away. Brush snapping, leaves rustling - and the distinct sound of antlers crashing. Once there was a break in the action, I offered three loud grunts with the True Talker.

Here they come.

A little basket-racked 8 pointer followed by a decent 7 pointer. The little guy stood at the base of my tree while I launched an arrow into his sparing partner.

The lesson I learned from it was how very much noise a couple of bucks can make in the woods - and how little that noise is made up of the actual rattling and grunting.

I would say loud enough to get the right sound out. Grunt calls travel quite aways in the woods. Last night I had a 6 pointer following out a doe it ended up walking right below my stand grunting all the way. I could hear him coming for a while and when he grunted by my stand it was actually real soft yet carried a long way. Do what it takes. Sometimes you may even want to muffle it a bit in your coat etc... so they don't bust ya totally.
