jeepguy
I went out here last night. I got buzzed by some ringbills, the dog saw them before I did. I turned around to fire and they were already over my head, fastest (Contact Us Please) thing I have ever tried to shoot at. Right then two drakes came right into my spread, by the time I reloaded they were gone, then a nice pair of mallards landed about 50 yds behind me in the cattails. All of this happened in a span of abotu 20 minutes, other than that, high flying groups and a lot of sky. I'll have to wait till later in the season for some bigger and less shy mallards to move in. Yesterday was frustrating for me, I will be back out there next week after work to give it a try again....I stay away from there on weekends, it is quit the scene. jeepguy
Back to my point about staying away from pelican on the weekends, especially in the fair weathr part of the season. It is hard to have a good hunting experience with 500 other hunters right in the same area. No wonder birds don't come around there a lot, it is one giant shooting gallery any given sat am during the season. I do not live far from the lake, and I like to drive by it on sat morns on my way to other spots and just laugh as I see 100 trucks competing for a space in line at the launch. I keep weekends to hunting private land or north dakota. I love going out to pelican because it is very close to my home, but I get sick and tired of showing up at a lake around 4 am only to get a barrage of spotlights shined in my face every spot I go to.
