I sent a note to the DNR and here is the latest news.....

Chris

"The proposal to end the muskie season on Nov. 30 instead of Feb. 24 is in a rule package. The package has been awaiting approval in the Governor's office for a while.

The change is planned to take place this year, but until the Governor signs the package, it is and will not be official. There will be a new release when and if it goes into effect, as well as a posting on our DNR HSOforum. At this time nothing is official, but it sounds like it will be."

Thanks for the update! With as late in the season as it is already, you think they'd just wait until the 2008 season to decide anything. Making a regulation change a few weeks before they want to implement it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Although some people would be aware of it, do they expect the majority of people to keep checking the regulations for updates all year long? Common sense says the majority of people will assume that the copy of the regulations they have is correct. Especially if they are checking it in October or November and it still says the season ends in February.

I didn't even touch the sucker question.....I get a headache just reading about it.

There were still fish being caught on the Miss up in the Brainerd area last year, that may be the only group really impacted by this.

Good night out for you last night for sure, I was on 'tonka last night chasing 'eyes. Not good, sounds like I needed to be west and I was east. Figures.

Has anybody had much luck fishing for muskie through the ice? I tried a couple times this season for the elusive beast of deep with no luck so far and would like to try on the hard water, assuming the season goes to Feb 24. Anybody have any tips (lures, depths, structure, etc)?

Here is the latest word on the pending Dec 1st closing proposal from the DNR. I'll let you all know if I hear more. Chris

It's still on the governor's desk, and it does sound like it will be signed. If signed before Nov 30th, the Dec 1st closed season will be in effect. If signed after Nov 30th, there would be a 5 day "notice period" then the season will be closed.

Not to beat a dead horse but from everything I heard this has already been made a law. After all its in the reg book. I hope it goes into affect so lakes like french and bryant actually get a break in the winter, but if it stays legal well then the more power to ya. I aint the warden and never will be. The muskie men in there little portables will still be there with there 12 inch suckers anyway.

It is NOT a law yet. It is in the regs as a potential reg change for 2007. Until the package is signed it is not an actual law.
