Pheasant Hunting North Dakota

I am looking to go pheasant hunting to ND this year. I am choosing ND over SD because I heard it is less crowded and you can hunt earlier in the day. Anybody have any ideas where there is lots of public land and a good amount of birds and not so many hunters?? I will be driving from central MN. thanks

Check out Divide County. It is in the very North west end of the state. Lots of plots land and pretty easy to get landowners permission. I have been checking that area for last couple weeks, and there are a lot of Pheasants and Grouse along the Montana and Canada border. Crops are almost all cut off now. CAJ

Go to the ND Game and Fish HSOforum and you can look at maps that show all of the public areas in the state.

Also when you buy your license they will give you a regs book and you can get a PLOTS book as well.

We go to the northwest area also. Lots of pheasants, sharptails, and some huns. The game and fish HSOforum is pretty good for finding public land and PLOTS land. If the land isnt posted you can hunt the land in N.D., but I still like to ask. All the farmers I have met out there are very friendly. Most of the time we dont see any other hunters out there besides ourselves, its a ways out there. The locals hunt on opener and very late in the season when there more bunched up.

Divide and Burke counties have very few towns and even fewer resources. Crosby had one hotel and they did not let dogs in the room.

Fill up the gas tank if you go buy a station that is open. May be closed that evening.

Finding farmers in that area can be hit or miss.

The issue with these two far NW counties is finding a place to stay that is close to hunting areas or you may end up driving 60 - 100 miles each way per day.

Camping would be easier ...

I do alot of deer hunting in Richland county which is 1 hour southwest of Fargo. I have some friends from North dakota that deer hunt with me and they are always doing very well just 30-50 miles west of the town of Leonard. They do alot of hunting from Leonard and west to Enderlin and a little further west and do very well. This year I plan on doing some bird hunting with them as they keep asking me to go with. I dont know about the chance for public hunting but after the first week or so they tell me that the locals are pretty good about letting them hunt.
