Changing gears

With the Sturgeon season starting this weekend I was able to make it out with a few "cat guys" to do a little worm soaking.

I've gotta admit, I had a great time and it was a breath of fresh air. Caught around 60 fish with a couple over 40".

Had quite a few doubles and even a triple at one point.

Not only was the fishing good, but the "scenery" was top notch on the St Croix due to the holiday weekend cool.gif

I hate to say it, but with the fall walleye bite on the MN picking up here shortly and the St Croix just a short hour drive, I've been thinking less and less about kitties.

I'll try to get a few pics up later today.

Good, people really shouldn't be lowering themselves fishing for trash fish like channels and flatheads. They're icky and gross! Be a winner and fish for walleyes and such! Leave them catfish to losers like me. wink.gif

Rob, I know your reply was in jest, but trust me, hook into a 50+" Sturgeon and your outlook will change.

I tend to forget the battle they give, and IMO nothing in MN beats it.

I agree, the big sturgeon will fight better than any flathead I've caught. Plus there's honestly a pretty good chance of catching them, as opposed to the slim pickins on 50 lb flatheads. Plus there's nice daytime scenery on the St Croix smile.gif

Had a great time, we'll do it again. The boat doesn't want to be ignored all fall like it usually is (hunting season).

I trust ya man for sure and would love to do it sometime.

I am just hoping more people find "better" things to chase this month and leave the river a little less crowded for me. Last night I dealt with 3-wheelers,4x4s, crying kids, country music and a bright a$$ gas lamp before having the river all to myself about 2am. These guys kept complaining about how they weren't catching anything when they were trying their best to scare everything for miles away.

There is about a month left of chasing Mr. Whiskers before the ever so long winter. I have to fill my fix before the fish and myself go into hibernation.

I heard the size was really running small out there on the Croix.

Where do all these little ones come from?? Heck of a good couple spawning years for sure. So considering how fast these things grow, we should have Rainy River caliber fishing in about 35 years. smile.gif

That was lots of fun fishing the Croix. Lots more numbers than the rainy, but size was tiny in comparrison. I will have to dig out the lake boat for the fall bite on the lakes around here anyway, so I might as well take it over to the st. croix a few times.

hanson...

There are some big sturgeon in the croix, probably way more than we think. I know of one 6'er that came out of there a few years ago.

It is strange the average size is small... but maybe its just hard to keep our lines from the little guys. I did have a few days last year with the average fish well over 40"... but way fewer fish caught.

Its a puzzle.. but I am not complaining with a consistant(most of the time) bite close to home.
