Curse of the flathead

Recommended Posts

Went out Friday night into Saturday morning. Had one really nice thump and load up at 9:15. My jinx just keeps on continuing though. This hit was on my lighter set up, only 50lb line. Last week when I missed those two at the boat I did tighten up my drag on that rod, but that was my heavier rod, 80lb line. Completely forgot about my lighter set up. So friday night when I went to set the hook into what seemed like a bigger fish, nothing but drag zipping into the air! Man I don't know what I have to do to get one in the boat lately. And ofcourse that was my only hit of the whole night, stuck'er till 5am. Hopefully tuesday am will treat me right. Just a big thanks out to Dan Thiem for transferring it(the curse) to me!! wink.gif

You don't catch them when you want to, you catch them when they want to bite.

The BPCL is a very good example for me. I've caught over 40 flats this year, but yet still haven't put a flat on the board yet. mad.gif

It's just a matter of having your bait in the right place at the right time and maximizing your percentages by spending ridiculous amounts of time on the water smirk.gif

BTW, Happy B-Day!

Oh I know all to well of the flat head “goose streak”.

Is was fishing a deep eddy the other day. First I tried the float tactic, with no luck. I gave it an hour and switched to a very small leader live rig. Once I did this the strikes started. After a couple of rod jerking thumps, I got one to stay on. I know this not the rule, but I was using a 7/0 circle. Performed the side swipe load up and started her into shore. Once she was on, I decided to give her the “onion”. My mistake! She got off. It wasn’t big, but I could of gotten an upgrade. After this I threw out another short leadered oci “J” hook rod, while I rerigged my big pole. Would you know it, no more runs. Gave her another hour and a half and left.

Trying to get enough moto to go back down to night! I might try Miss. River North for a channel upgrade!

Happy B-day crazy ice!

Truer words were never written. I started catfishing last year and did OK with channels, but never caught a flat. This year I've caught four with the BPCL and five on my own. The five were caught on one weekend with probably 60 hours before without a run. I was about to take up gardening.

50 # line-80# line-Not enough drag?

I find this hard to understand.

Drag is one of the items checked

before
you start fishing.

I will start fishing again in a few days and

you can laugh at me

I am finding these things out the hard way I guess. I am relatively new to the whole catfishing side of things so I think that I can possibly use that as an excuse. You know, inexperience and all! grin.gif

I think we've all found out the hard way.

The funny thing is, a rookie cat guy has a hard time understanding how big, heavy, and overkill everything is. A wise man said, "This ain't walleye fishing!". smile.gif

Ask me about the 2 fish I lost (both 30-35lb +) within 45 minutes of each other on one night in my beginning catfishing days. I thought 50lb Power Pro was unbreakable. Ooops. You can NOT pay me to spool with anything less than 80lb now.

It's getting hard to consitently put flatheads in the boat for me this late in the season. Friday I was out with Flaco & RiverRunnerZ. A few channels and a carp was it, no flats. Saturday Flaco and I had similar results channels & sheepshead. We brought another buddy of ours out Sunday to try again. An overall slow night, a couple channels(one 10 pounder),a sheepsheads and one flathead. The flat was caught at 6:30 a.m. a half hour before heading home. Each night we brought suckers and bullies for live bait and shad and suckers for cut. The flathead took a bullhead.
