Boar
I Have picked out an alternative bait site on my land to bear hunt if I'm forced too. The place is deep in our river bottom, the site (not established yet) is an ideal location but one thing bothers me it's 25 yrds from a river, not a big river, probabley ten yrds across an shallow. I was wondering your thoughts of a bait site near a river in the idea that bear might not feel comfertable coming to a site near running water because they wont be able to hear over the current. Boar P.S Would a bear rather sit out a rain shower or would'nt he care an move regardless. Whats your ideal weather pattern to hunt bear. Boar again. maros91
I would see no problem hunting next to the river. The deeper the woods the better. My ideal bear hunting conditions are cloudy and cool. Sixty's for highs and cloudy skies. Did you get your bait ball yet?
Neiko
I wouldn't sweat the river. You see a lot of videos shot by the rivers up in Canada. As for the rains showers I don't think they will mind. My second bear I shot it was raining and some serious lightning and thunder was going on just not a down pour. I was using a bow and it was my second date with the wife. She was video taping for me. I had just thought to myself how nuts she must think I am and was going to get down when I saw it come in. I always bring rain gear just in case. Boar
Thanks guys, yea I got my ball about a week ago keeping it in the fridge in the shop cause this bacon ball is something else. I'm gonna have to handle it with rubber dish gloves when I hang it, this thing is unbelievable it stinks up everything I cant wash it of my hands, the crdboard box it came in is still stinking up the shop. If a bear dont come to this there is no bear for miles around my site. I wish I could explain how effective this ball should be, Im dumbfounded in the potency of it an it still is in the two plastic bags it came in. charliepete2
Boar....if you could send me the HSOforum on the ball I'd apprecaite it [email protected]Don't worry a bit about being by a river. I actually prefer setting up by them. Rivers are natural funnels and most likely will bring more bear past your bait. River edges typically have better berry crops than the surrounding forest and bears learn to key in on the banks. The river also gives you a better idea of where the bear will be coming in from. They will cross water, but more than likely they'll try to keep dry. Setting up next to a river can also be handy if the wind is blowing your scent over the water. In that case you are less likely to be busted by a and old smart bear that normally circles the bait before coming in.
Boar
Yea no problem, One thing on this river site is he cant circle around behind me cause it slopes down at a 80 degree angle about a hundred feet till it bottoms out an you have river bottom. The tree I pick out for a stand is right up against the slope. But the 80 degree slope is'nt gonna be fun. And..... the river bottom is surrounded buy a bean feild that we lease out sooo... As much as I want to use the site I hope I dont have to. Boar
