speedometer sometimes dosen't work

98 ford windstar. Last it wouldn't shift into second and the speedometer never moved from zero. It works fine now. Lately the needle has been jumping around while driving. Any suggestions

The comon things on the windstar is a cluster, or the speed sensor. First thing I would do is hook a labscope, or a/c volt meter to the speed sensor, and see what the output of the sensor is as you are driving, if it looks good, then ck the signal at the speedo head ( cluster ) if it is the same as the sensor, replace cluster. If it is not ck wiring. If the signal out of the sensor is erratic, replace sensor.
