Inboard/Outboard Lower Unit

Was out boating tonight and broke off part of the fin the points down on the bottom of the lower unit on our motor. Will that being broken hurt anything or should it be fixed right away?

It will affect your steering some, but not real noticable. A repair can wait a while.

If you don't want to replace the whole thing, they have kits at Cabelas and Gander that is a plate that goes ovet the existing fin and bolts into place. Looks like a good product to work with.

The term is skeg and its main job is to prevent the prop from getting destroyed. Call a company that does welding they will probably make you one for around a hundred bucks.

Cabela's sells one called a Blackfin Skeg Protector that you can glue on yourself for about $70.

Thanks for the replies. Talked to R&R Marine where we got the boat and they said just to use it and this fall when we bring the boat in for service they will just weld it back to normal. thanks

No skeg means no prop protection in the same sense that a doorstop protects your wall from being bashed in by the the doorknob.
