Anywhere on Lake Michigan a guy could catch some salmon and get by with a 17ft crestliner? Door county vs. port washington etc. Or, should I just hire a charter. We have fished on the Michigan side, but never the Wisconsin side.

Thanks

I realize it is dependent on the wind and direction, but is there an area that is usually easier or better than others to get out more often than not? We are looking to head over labor day weekend.

I was out last year in my 16' crestliner. I moved up to a 18 footer this year which is still small for michigan but It really just depends on the weather.

you get to deeper water closer to shore out of algoma than sturgeon bay. 17' is plenty but you risk the chance of going all the way over there and not getting out of the harbor with any signifcant wind from the south, north, north east or south east. i understand there are fish to be had closer to shore this summer and even some fish coming from the piers under lower light conditions if you choose to not head out 5 mile to the bank out of sturgeon bay. we used to kill them from the pier and in the boat within a mile of shore this time of year in the 80's. of course, there is pretty good perch fishing and smallie action on the green bay side if you cant get on the lake but thats not why you go there for the most part. best of luck.

No reason you cant get out there in your 17 footer.. But as all have said and you know, winds are the prevailing factor..

IMHO, Algoma and ports south of there are your best bet... Near shore action can be found from there down.. Say out of Port Washington for example, a lot of times we are no further then 1/4 mile from shore.

I was there this weekend and saw everything from a 12' jon boat to 35' boats. Yes, you can go out with a 17 and I plan on it with mine. Key things to remember, watch the weather, wearyour lifejacket, have a marine radio, if in doubt, don't go out! The bigger boats don't always see a smaller boat so be aware of the other boats around you as well. A smaller boat was hit by a bigger one this morning right near the mouth of the harbor.
