A little advice?

I am looking to purchase another motor..(quick) for my pontoon, I ran across 1988 Force 40HP, what do u guys have to say about this. I know a lot of people are tainted on them, but are they really that bad?? How much would this unit be worth, good condition with controls?

I searched back when the last time this was discussed about the bayliner. My other question would this have an L drive?? Because every one said to stay away from them if they did??

I had a 40 force on my old boat, never again unless you like to mix your gas. Another thing is it is only Two cylinders, and lacks the expected power. Otherwise it always started for me (even with year old non-stabilized gas)

would not be a huge issue to mix the gas...we currently did that.underpowered would not be a huge issue either..did it have the L drive?

L drives are a 2 stroke powerhead mounted inside the boat, with the drive coming out of the bottom of the boat. the boat has to be made for that set up. in other words, you dont have to worry about someone selling you one for you boat, unless the boat was made for it. To the best of my knowledge, Bayliner and Maxum were the only boats that they were available in.

Force Ldrive is 90 HP or greater and mounted on a bayliner boat. There is no such thing as a 40 HP L Drive. Biggest issue with the force is that you have to maintain it. Which means replace impeller frequently, insure gas mix is correct and that the carb is not running too lean. These motors if not taken care of are prone to loosing cylinders due to overheating or running lean. Get a model number and check the stator. Prestolite ignitions are a pain and you want a red stator not the black one. The other issue is the torque on the prop. This motor will spin hubs pretty easy on a hole shot.
