Smells and Sounds

Hey folks,
Someone started a great topic in the open water forum about the favorite smells of outdoorsmen. Ice fisherman were severly under-represented as I saw no one (except for me) mentioned the smell of ice auger exhaust or that smell that fills the portable just after you light the lantern.
I'd like to read what are the favorite smells and sounds of ice fishing for you guys as we wait away the days. (I apologize ahead of time, knowing this is going to make most of us crave ice more than we already do.)

Up with stories, down with the thermometer!

Oh Yeah the Smells & Sounds of Hardwater,

1.The Smell of an early morning air @ -10 while your nose hairs are freezing while making swiss-cheese on the ice with the auger.

2. The smell of Fish Slime on your hands after having a good hour or two of bobber action.

3. The sounds of ice cracking and the ever increasing sound as it rips across the lake & right under your shack.

4. The sound of excitement in your kids voice as they say "Dad-Dad Flag Up!"

5. And my personal favorite sound of all is when a fish hits so hard that the bobber "Pops" when going under. smile.gif

The smell of the auger exhaust. The cold/cool air smell when you step out of the portbale to get a breath of fresh air, awww. The sound of the drag on my reel when the fish takes line. The slow jingle on the rattle reel before it takes off. Conversation with dad while fishing. The sound of a nearby fisherman swearing because he just lost a big fish. The crying of a nearby fishermen because he just lost a big fish. The sound of your heartbeating when your holding that big walleye taking a picture. Oh yeah, one more, the sound of silence when your the first one of the lake in the morning and the almost silence roar of the lantern as you walk out onto the lake.

Ice fishing is great!!!

Good Fishing, Matt.

Hate the wind but, nothing better than hearing it roar when your tucked nice and cozy in your portable or sleeper.

Nothing better than watching your buddy come out of the shack gasping for air after loosing the coin flip to see who has to re-drill the holes....mmmmmm auger breath.

And, oh yes, that musty sawdust smell when you open the waxies container.

Ah the smell of really hot rubber because your buddy feel asleep with his foot next to the heater! Oh and the site and sound of a WOOF as two die hard fishermen come baling out of there clam because there extremely dangerous lantern on a lp tank came loose and they have 2 foot flames and one brave soul tries to turn it off! Funniest thing i ever saw! Bet there was a little smell of burnt hair in that house! Funny at the time but could of turned out bad.
Another one for ya. Me and my buddy had our boys with last year and after being in the house most of the day we decided to let them run around on the ice. Needless to say i have my boy come warm up and he says i need to dump my boot out?? Well i thought maybe some snow or something but you guessed it, water and up to his knee! Must of put his foot in a hole. Spent rest of the day trying to dry his clothes. Kinda makes you think that it could of been a spearing hole!

It's midnight. I'm on a gin-clear deep lake in northwestern Wisconsin. I'm fishing walleyes on a shallow rocky main lake point with deep water on each side.

I step out to, well, you know why a guy steps outside a Fish Trap II at night, right?

Anyway, I've left the smell of burned water on the heater from a splashing fish, the punky odor of of minnow bodies squashed under my feet, the rich smell of a couple 23-inch pike I've struggled to keep from freezing in the bottom of the Trap.

Gently at first it comes to me, then stronger on the wind, the tang of white pines. The gusts push their sighs through the needles.

I start to wonder why I work for a living. I don't want to go home.

Heres one from experience....
The sound of someone walking through the snow up to your fish house door then the sound of them locking it. The sound of a 5 gallon bucket going over the chimney and the smell of a good oak fire in a quality airtight woodstove filling the house.. That has happened :-) Still one of my all time favorite smells is starting up the woodstove using fuel oil for a little help, Auger fumes come in a distant second.. Paul
