Rod Holder Question

Yeah, A buddy and I took one of those metal rod bird feeders and cut the top half off it and used a torch and bent the rest in the rod holding part. Love it, hate to fish without it.

Anyway... there are plenty of ways to mount rod holders on that boat.

You can use side mount brackets, drill through the side of the boat, and mount the brackets with bolts and nuts through the boat.

You can also use side mount brackets, with a rail mount adapter and mount them around the top edge of your gunwhales.

Here's a photo of the rod holders on my boat. These are actually RAM rod holders, side mount bracket with the rail mount adapter. You'll have to use your imagination but you can use this same setup on the edge/rail of your boat, you'll need longer bolts than what are provided.

I've got a picture somewhere of the rod holder's on my dad's boat which would work perfect for you but I can't find it right now. Stay tuned, I'll try to dig it up.

A word of the wise.. be sure on any rail mount rod holder(type that clamps to a bar) i mounted with some type of material for extra grip in the clamp that mounts to the rail... a piece of roofing rubber works very well. Its not cool when your tight lining and your holder pivots down to the water!

Rams are great holders.. for the jon boat, standard side mount bases will work fine. I just drilled the holes in my boat, and mounted them with 1/4-20 stainless bolts. Depending n the size of your rail, you may ned to make up some type of spacer to assure the holder wont rub the rail, especially so if you use attwood or scotty holders that sit flush on the top of the bracket, and not extended like the ram.

would a piece of pvc and a two hole strap two_hole_straps_tn.jpg screwed to the rail work?

or if you want to make something that doesnt require drilling inyour boat, attach it to the floor. Make it out of wood..a little box, or tower or something

I can see yur concept, but I would invest in a decent rod holder with proper mounting brackets before going with a strap(2) and pvc method.

Looking at that jon boat, another alternative would be flush mount(standng) rod holders, the rods stand at about a 70 degree angle pointed out the back. Those types of holders are ideal for catfishing becuase yur rod doesnt get hung up under load, you simply lif the rod out and catch your fish, and it looks like ou have ample anchoring points at the rear of the boat(bench/deck).

I guess if someone wants to save money, and doesnt care about the appearance of the boat, pvc would work. A bad downfall of that idea, once you drill holes, they are there forever. It would take 2 brackets to hold the pvc stationary.
