spincast reels for kids

crewdog

Question

Just wondering if anyone has found a spin cast reel that can handle slip bobbers. All of the lower cost or children model combos always seem to get hung up when i try to set the little guy up for some slip bobbering. It's still too early for him to switch to a spinning reel. any idweas help would be appreciated.

I have three young daughters and they are using closed face reels. The problem with them is that they don't release line very well as a whole. I have one Diawa Gold Cast that does a great job, yet the exact same model on another rod is nothing but problems. Go figure.... I had decent luck with the Johnson, but the handles have a tendancy to come apart it you don't keep an eye on them. Bottom line - I am using them now, but I can't wait until they can move to open faced equipment.

The line pick up in closed face reels messes with knotted thread bobber stops most times. I've used those little flexible dog bone shaped things that you thread the line through and they don't get hung up as often. They aren't perfect but they can help. Sometimes depending on the bobber you need to use that thing along with a thread knot. There's another little rubber bumper kind of bobber stop out there too, I've never tried them but they look like they are less likely to slip on the line when using a closed face reel.

Good luck.

Crew, I went to Gander and picked up one of there Guide spinning reels for my daughter.I think it is a ul-5???

It is the ultra light one becuase most of the fishing we do is for panfish.

Also being smaller it fit's in her hands better.

I dont know how old your children are, but I taught mine about 5-6 yrs old on how to cast an open face, believe it or not they are quick learners. That saying I have a 42 yr old friend that just cant figure one out. If you spend a little time with them, Im sure they will want to fish with the same type as dad does.

I gave my 5 yr old daughter a citca spinning reel. The $29.99 one and an ugly stick. She can cast great and it is smooth. The snoopy rod was like grinding frozen meat in a meat grinder. That set up is so much better for reeling in larger fish.

    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
    • I’ve only seen that from the air.
