Question

I would like to replace the plywood floor in my fish and ski boat the plywood thats in there now looks like an exterior grade and I know marine grade is big $$$ Can I use an exterior grade and seal it? Then install the carpet any thoughts?

Thanks,

Use regular ole AC plywood and coat it with fiberglass resin. You can get the fiberglass at Wal-Mart or any auto parts store. No need to spend the big ching for Marine grade plywood. Do not use green treated plywood if it's an aluminum boat.

Treated plywood is not made for horizontal applications. AC or PTS is made with exterior glue and, if treated properly, will last a long time. Treated plywood will delaminate very quickly, especially if it gets wet and is then exposed to hot, humid conditions.

I tried to go cheap when replacing my floor a few years ago. Marine grade may cost more but it's better than replacing your floor again in another few years when the cheaper stuff fails.

We've been installing BC grade in all of our floor repair jobs for the last 20 years without any problems. The key is in the preparation. In an assembly line they don't have the luxury of extensively treating every floor piece they install, but you do. We use an epoxy resin and coat both sides before installation. We also discuss proper maintainance with the customer before the boat leaves. This is probably one of the most important aspects. If you take care of the floor, regardless of the type of wood, it will take care of you.
