Hey north 4 of us just got back yesterday. Our boat put 107 eyes in the boat. We caught alot more eaters this year on our big fish spots. The fish were already into early summer mode. Most fish were deep, 18-23'. Nothing at all shallow for us like last year. I had a 28" and a 28 3/4". We had 3 more between 28 1/2"-29 1/4". I think in our boat we ended up with 7 more between 26-28" and about 15 in that 24-25" range. The 18-19" fish were all over the place. If we would have wanted too target those fish we could have doubled what we did catch. A few spots were loaded with them. We didnt try for crappies at all. We did get some 34-37" northerns out in 25' on lindys.

How long were you up there for? was that a week? or a weekend?

Planning a short trip up there in a couple weeks. Could be looking for a fishing partner... anyone interested? You would probably have to supply your own transportation though. I will be up there for work.

Hey James

A group of us are going up to dogtooth in late Aug. None of us has been up there before. We are staying at the dogtooth resort (maybe that is the only resort on the lake). Just looking for some advice from a person who has been up there. Any advice would be great Appreciated. Once again thanks for your time. [YouNeedAuthorization]

You might find someone else here who might be able too give better advice than i can about fishing there in August. Its a different ballgame later in summer i would believe. We found some fish already on some reefs and from what i've heard that is the game in the summer. A lindy rig with a leech off the sides of those reefs in about 23-27' of water is what i would do. I know alot of people like split shot rigs with leeches also in summer. When you get there, Wayne, the owner, will help point you in the right direction. I think i forgot too mention earlier in this post, there was a 33 1/2"er caught by a guy in camp last week. It was released.

I have been fishing dogtooth for 13 years now. I have fished it in May, June, July, August and Septemper and have to say I have to say my best trips have been mid Aug. The fish will be on the reefs and the lake has lots of them. Fish the windy side of the reefs any ware from 4ft to 30ft depending on the wind and cloud cover. I have found the best reefs to be the ones that top off at about 8 to 10 feet and close to deep water. I will be up there myself Aug 17th thru 21st. Its a great lake with lots of big eyes. Good luck!

I guess it would be better to say my trips in Aug. have been more consistant. The spring trips have been a little more hit or miss depending on the spring temps whare as Aug. The fishing has always been good. I would say that goes for numbers and size.{The big fish are deffenitly heavier later in the summer.} One problem with later in the summer is that leeches can be very hard to come by in Canada that time of year so we will generaly use crawlers.Dont get me wrong. I love to fish Dogtooth any time of year but if I could only go once a year it would probebly be mid Aug.

Figbish:

Thank you so much for the post. It sounds like we will all have a great time. What kind of presentation would you recommend, color type we should focus on, and any other advice you may have. I know the key to fishing is your secrets but i am just looking for some general idea. I will also talk to Wayne at the resort in early Aug but we are just trying to get a heads up. If you would like to email me you can do so at [YouNeedAuthorization]@aol.com. Thanks again for your post. Cory

What I like to do is live bait rig with about a 6ft snell. I like a red #6 gamagatsu octapuss hook for large leeches or crawlers and will go to a #8 hook if the leeches are small. {that seems like a very small hook but they work great with small leeches.) I will use a 1/4 once slip sinker if it is not to windy and go up in weight if I cant get a good feel for the bottom. FISH SLOW. I dont think its possible to fish this pressentation to slow. As for where to fish Wayne will mark a map for you. He will probebly give you to many spots to try and your head will be spinning. focus on the reefs with deep water near by. There are a handfull of good reefs within a fifteen min. boat ride from the resort. Hope this helps and have a great trip.

Thank you so much for all your info. One last thing do you think we will have a problem buying leeches up there in mid to late august? If, so any suggestions on how to solve that. Once again thanks so much for the info. [YouNeedAuthorization]
