clothing to bring

Recommended Posts

My son and I are taking our first canadian fishing trip to Temple Bay Lodge on Eagle lake. I have been told so many different things to bring up there to wear. We will be there from June 8-11. I don't want to overpack then again I don't want to be without warm enough clothes if it does get that cold. The one item everyone says is to have a good rain suit, which we have. From there it has been a myriad of suggestions from fleece lined jackets to bringing winter hunting gear (which I don't have). Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't think you will need the hunting gear, but you will want to make sure you do have a wide range of clothes to choose from... I would recommend think about looking for clothes that you can wear in layers... I have become a big fan of exercise pants while fishing... I where a pair of shorts underneath... The exercise pants do not constrict as much as jeans or kakis so that I have better movement and I am more comfortable... Along with that if you do have a fleece and a sweat shirt or two you should be ok... But you are correct, having a good rain suit is one of the most if not the most important thing to have... I will also say, the most uncomfortable I have been fishing up there is where it turns out to be a scorcher and I do not have the ability to tear off a few layers... Don't forget the sunscreen...

First, always remember if you don't have it with you, you can not put it on, and conversely, you can always take it off if you don't need it. I am in Canada the same week. In addition to the quality rainsuit, you will want an insulated jacket, a pair of thermal underwear, hooded sweatshirt, a turtle neck, stocking cap, gloves, and waterproof boots for the cool side/early morning boat rides. I also take plenty of jeans, pair of shorts and t-shirts for the warmer side. I pack a small ditty/duffle bag for in the boat which has what I think I might need for that day. Some days you use it all and on other days you may never need it. Not much worse than being on the lake, wet and cold - espcecially if the bite is slow. I really do not think you will need a winter snow suit.

A good pair of sunglasses and sunscreen are a must regardless of weather conditions. I am sure others will add to the list but I hope this gives you a good start.

Yep, layers is the way to go. My usual outfit for fishing is a t shirt, flannel long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker (lined or not). I also throw in a heavier jacket just in case the mornings are chilly. This way you can add or subtract as you need them. I'm not a fan of shorts, because the bugs will make you dinner in quick order.

Also, throw in a pair of longjohns. You may not need them, but as they say, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. And plenty of socks. Also, an extra pair of shoes just in case you get wet. There's nothing that takes longer to dry than a pair of boots or sneakers.

Been going up to Lac Seul in 1st or 2nd week in June for the past 7 years and we have experienced everything from snow to rain to 80+ degrees, sometimes all in the same week. You just never know what to expect.

If you search the net for the weather center you should be able to find a weather forecast to help out.

Now I have been going up for years in the beginning of June and fortunately I have never come across that type of weather but I find it awfully strange that the same day I read your post, I have a dream, last night, that I was breaking ice in a blizzard to get our boat back to the lodge... grin.gif (you know you have fishing fever when you dream about it...)

I too have fished for a number of year the 1st or second week of June and have experienced all types of weather. One week we started fishing in the 30's with snow on the ground and by the end of the week 80's. Better to be prepared. Good Luck
