Muskie as a Pet

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I can purchase a 2-4 inch muskie. I have a 30 gallon fish and was just wondering if anyone has done this before. Info like water temp, feeding, tank accesseries, etc. would really help. Thanks

Check your local pet store. Some carry native fish. Besides that, your best bet is to go straight to the MN Muskie Farm.

As for tank conditions...

Water temp - No need for a heater. As long as the tank doesnt freeze you wont have a problem. I keep mine in my garage that I keep heated at about 50 all winter long. In the summer, the tank is at ambient temp.

Food - Pet store goldfish work fine. Crappie minnows are cheaper once the fish is big enough to eat them

Accessories - Natives are pretty messy so make sure you have a good filter system.

Also, in a 30 gallon tank you probably wont have that fish very long. They eat alot and grow fast. I had a Pike outgrown a 55 gallon in under a year. When they get to big for a tank they start running into the glass and really beating themselves up.

It would work.. I used to have a northern a long time ago.. fed him goldfish.. amazing animal!! Only trouble.. he outgrew his 55 gallon tank quite fast! Started at 2" and grew to 15" and had trouble turning around. Perhaps I fed him too much.. but a muskie.. hmmmmmm.... bass are better!

While I was attending BSU, a guy on my floor at a tiger musky in an aquarium. I will admit, it was pretty cool, but as others have stated he began to have issues with it outgrowing the tank and he became very aggressive. When he fed the fish, he often jumped clear out of the tank. It was still pretty cool, but I don't think he made the entire school year before he dumped it in the lake.

A friend of mine had a muskie. Same problems as most. It got to big(12-13 in) and one day while cleaning his tank, he put it in a bucket. Takin a short break to eat something he returned to find the fish laying on the floor all full of carpet hair. It was a fun and beutifull pet to have though.

I suggest a bigger tank than 30 and I would fead him no more than is needed to keep him healthy.

There is a place called Aquatropics its in Newhope I think. Look in the phonebook its the only fishstore on Douglas drive. The have all the local fish you can buy (early season like right now is the best time to buy).
