Yamaha F150 and trolling

fishing 101

Question

We have a Yamaha F150. When we troll with this we are running around 700 RPM but the GPS speed is over 3 MPH. Can you turn down the idle or anything to get a slower trolling speed around 2 MPH? This is on a Ranger 1860 Angler.

You might be able to get it turned down to 600 in gear.. but that would be it and still likely wouldn't get you where you want to be.

I'd buy a drift sock or two and throw them over the side.

That, or buy a kicker grin.gif

You can't adjust the idle at all on that motor from what I've been told. There are many anglers who aren't happy with the trolling performance of the F150 Yamaha. I would suggest looking into Amish Outfitter trolling bags. You can get two 15 inch bags for about $60 and they will slow you down to 2.0 or so and you will at least be able to troll cranks with the motor. It is important to note that most drift socks will not withstand the rigors of trolling and will eventually break at the seems. The trolling bags are heavier built and will not break. All of the charter boats use these Amish outfitter trolling bags on the great lakes and they work very well.
