Boat Registration Question

Recommended Posts

Do WI residents have to register new boats and trailers in MN and WI? I've read the WI regulations and it doesn't seem like it, but I just want to make sure. I've never owned a boat I had to register before and I know alot of you guys have gone through this process. I live in Superior, Wisconsin, so I'll be fishing in both states regularly.

As far as I know you only have to register the boat in the state it resides.

I purchased my boat from a private party in Duluth, Mn. and live in Superior, Wi. and have mine registered in Wi. only.

Coast Guard, DNR, Sheriff all have looked at it and have never said anything about it.

Only need to register the boat in the state you use it the majority of the time.. Each states have different laws governing this... In WI, if the boat is in the state for 90 consecitive days it has to be registered here...

So, just register the boat here in WI, you will be good for either state.

I beleive trailers over 3,000lbs are supposed to be liscened also. That is total rig wieght.

But this seems to be a grey area. I have asked 2 different people at the (Contact Us Please) and been told 2 different answers.
