Advice on removing a bearing carriage please

I have a 91 johnson outboard and am having difficulty removing the bearing carriage to rebuild the lower unit. I have tried a bearing puller, a slide hammer and soaking in a solvent. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I might not be understanding you or your situation, but...it must be somewhat mobile/ out of the lower unit. Try heating it up in oil (I have used a "fry Daddy" type unit to get bearings off of crank shafts (like motor oil or the like)), causing it to expand and should be able to remove more easily.

The "Fry Daddy" could never be used for food again, just for the shop.

I have mostly used this method to preheat bearings to put onto the shafts. Be creative.

Another idea along the same line, try heating the outer with a heat gun or a propane torch - it expands more allowing disassembly of close or slight interference fit parts. SAFETY FIRST - it needs to be clean enough of lubricant to not catch fire while working if you use a torch. I don't recommend a 'cutting torch', etc: too hot to control easily. This trick works with a lot of press-fit parts.

You did remove the 4 screws/bolts first, right?
