Repair a 25 horse Merc?

I have a 1987 25 horse Merc, love it to death. Well, it died. Seems to have blown a ring, so they tell me. Question I have is it worth overhauling? New sleeves and all. Sounds like the parts are reasonable, but I have heard from a couple of "repairees" that they could never get theirs running worth a hoot after such repairs. I love the 2 cycle, don't want to buy a 4. Anyone have any knowledge to share on this?? I appreciate any input.

Thats a great motor and definitly worth repairing if you are capable of doing it yourself. However with shop rates at $75 or more per hour, an overhaul would soon exeed the value of the engine. Perhaps you could purchase a good used one for less. I'd guesstimate the value at $6-700. As far as not running good after being overhauled, take that with a grain of salt. If done properly, the engine will run as good as new.

I had an 87 Mariner rebuilt a few years ago and it ran great after the rebuild...would I do it again...NO it cost more than the motor was worth. I think you would be better off getting a different motor.

Thanks, I was thinking it should be a good thing, I have a good neighbor, very mechanically astute, so it looks like it will be a few evenings project for us. I am thinking it would be best to do both cylinders immediately. Thanks again.

I just got rid of one on a trade the best deal I could get was $500 Canadian for it. Tried 3 dealers they all said its not worth much. I bet you could sell it for parts and buy another for much less than the repair bill.
