Aftermarket Exhaust System

baldav

Question

Does anyone know anything about after market exhaust systems? My 2002 Tahoe is making horrible gargling noises at RPMs just about idle. I'm considering just replacing the whole system. Can anyone provide a recommendation on name brand providers of aftermarket exhaust systems? Also, any thoughts on their claims to increase HP and improve fuel economy?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts. This forum has great for all sorts of things!

I've always had dual exhaust on my trucks, always cat-back systems. As long as you are cat-back, the cat is still the point of most restriction and anything you do behind it will be minimal for HP and fuel economy. But I like the look and the sound.

In actuality you may change your driving habits with dual exhaust to make the engine sound louder and meaner, and that may hurt your fuel economy.

If you really want benefits from exhaust, you need to start in front of the cat but that gets a lot pricier.

Just my $.02 worth - I had never had dual exhaust before, and I made the switch about 2 years ago with my '02 Chev 2500HD. I regret going with dual exhaust. I went with the mildest, minimal "growl" that I could (loud rapping glass-packs aren't my style), but at mid-range RPMs, my ears still ring and the rumble is more than I wanted. Don't get me wrong - the truck sounds great and all the guys in my neighborhood tell me how "manly" it is, but I wish I would've stayed stock.

Oh yeah - as for power and mpg: no change with typical driving habits. That may be a product of having a 6.0l with 4.10 gears, however.
