Active Breeding

I saw two different hens get bred this morning in the 30 minutes I watched a flock. There was also another gobbler to the side servicing himself.

All the jakes were chased away early, and there must be a ton of fighting in this flock. One tom has two missing tailfeathers, another with half a tailfeather, and another bird has some misplaced, missing, and ruffled feathers on his breast.

At another spot I saw 6 jakes picking in a field, all by their lonesome.

I heard only two volleys of gobbling, but it was directly after the only hen yelping I heard, and all birds were 150 yards from me in a field.

There's alot of competition out there!

Not the way I'd normally put it, but the way it should be put in writing.

Every once in awhile I'll call in a gobbler that will hangup at 60 yards and do this. Seriously. Just come 20 steps closer.

Ya I've seen 'it' before as well. Had 4 jakes come in one morning with all sorts of X rated behavior. Was the last day of the season - at first I'm thinking, "Nope, not gonna shoot a jake" then they tinkered around forever and I'm like "OK, the fingers itchy" then they wandered off just in time, then they came back and I managed to resist. On the way home, ready to admit defeat I drove by my uncles and there were 3 strutters out off the highway. I put the steatlth sneak on and got one...it was tough carrying that bird out of the woods with that big horseshoe in the way!

Cooter:

That's what it's all about (the sneak). Sometimes, they're so close and the property is so filthy with birds you can't believe you didn't get one. Other times, the "hail-mary-statue-of-liberty" play works the way it hasn't the previous 22 times you've tried it. I love turkey hunting.
